ROLE OVERVIEW
Job Title: Petroleum Inspector
Job Type: Permanent
Location: Grangemouth (Field based role)
Hours: Average working hours, 48 hours per week, which can include evenings, and weekends (you will be working around ship/ vessel timings)
Salary: From £31,724, including a company vehicle
Industry: Natural Resources - Environmental and Oil & Gas
This is a hands-on, field-based role where you'll work across terminals, vessels, and customer sites, ensuring cargoes are accurately measured, sampled, and inspected to the highest industry standards. - Carrying out cargo inspections, measurements, sampling, and stock assessments of petroleum, chemical, and related products.
- Ensuring all inspection activities are completed safely, accurately, and in line with industry standards, client requirements, and SGS procedures.
- Producing detailed inspection reports, certificates, timesheets, and supporting documentation.
- Working closely with customers, terminals, laboratories, and operational teams to deliver a professional and responsive service.
- Maintaining inspection equipment and ensuring PPE is used and cared for correctly.
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and contributing to operational excellence across the business.
- Representing SGS professionally whilst delivering a high-quality service to customers.
Qualifications
We're interested in candidates who have experience within hydrocarbon inspection, storage and terminal operations, laboratory testing, marine operations, chemical manufacturing, or a similar industrial environment.
You will ideally have:
- Experience in petroleum, chemical, or hydrocarbon inspection, custody transfer, or storage operations.
- Knowledge of sampling, measurement, and inspection techniques within the oil & gas or chemical sectors.
- Familiarity with industry standards such as API, ASTM, ISO, or Energy Institute (EI) methods.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate reports and technical documentation.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- A flexible approach and willingness to work outdoors and undertake physically active field work.
- A full UK driving licence.

Desirable Experience
While not essential, we'd be particularly interested in hearing from candidates with:
- IFIA certification.
- Laboratory or analytical chemistry experience.
- Previous marine, terminal, refinery, or petrochemical industry experience.
- Internal or external auditing qualifications.
- Experience working within ISO-accredited environments.
