Job Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised Pharmacy Assistant – Logistics Supervisor to join the Pharmacy Department at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust - Southmead. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the day-to-day management of the Pharmacy Logistics Service, ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant storage, handling and transportation of medicines across the Trust. Working within a supportive and forward-thinking team, you will contribute to delivering a high-quality service that underpins patient care while supporting service development, quality improvement and operational excellence.

Main Duties of the Job

As the Pharmacy Assistant – Logistics Supervisor, you will be responsible for coordinating the day to day operation of the Pharmacy Logistics Service and supervising the Logistics team to ensure the safe, timely and efficient delivery of medicines to patients in their own homes following discharge from hospital. You will allocate workload, provide day to day leadership and support to staff, and ensure all activities are undertaken in accordance with Good Distribution Practice (GDP), Wholesale Dealer Authorisation (WDA(H)) requirements, Trust policies and Standard Operating Procedures.

You will work closely with pharmacy colleagues, ward teams, discharge coordinators, transport providers and external courier services to coordinate medicine deliveries, resolve operational issues and maintain continuity of patient care. You will also contribute to staff training and development, monitor service performance, participate in audits and quality improvement initiatives, and promote a culture of safety, governance and continuous improvement.

We are looking for a motivated individual with excellent organisational, communication and leadership skills who is able to prioritise competing demands, support colleagues and maintain high standards of service delivery in a busy operational environment.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The Pharmacy Assistant – Logistics Supervisor is responsible for supervising the day to day operation of the Pharmacy Logistics Service, ensuring medicines and pharmaceutical products are stored, handled and transported safely, efficiently and in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Supervising and coordinating the daily workload of the Pharmacy Logistics team.
  • Providing day to day leadership, support and guidance to Logistics Assistants.
  • Ensuring compliance with Good Distribution Practice (GDP), Wholesale Dealer Authorisation (WDA(H)) requirements, Trust policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Supporting the safe storage, handling and transportation of medicines and pharmaceutical products.
  • Investigating operational issues, incidents and delivery discrepancies, implementing corrective actions where appropriate.
  • Monitoring service performance and maintaining accurate operational records and documentation.
  • Supporting staff induction, training, competency assessment and ongoing development.
  • Participating in audits, service reviews and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Working collaboratively with pharmacy colleagues, other Trust departments, and external stakeholders to deliver an efficient, safe and responsive logistics service.

Person Specification

Education And Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • GCSE English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above)
  • Level 2 Qualification in Pharmacy Services (e.g. Buttercups Pharmacy Support Worker Course)
  • Willingness to undertake Leadership and Management training, including recruitment, sickness management and appraisal processes

Desirable criteria

  • Level 2 Leadership and Management qualification or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and accurate data entry
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work effectively under pressure
  • Ability to coordinate team workload to ensure safe and effective service delivery

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of Good Distribution Practice (GDP), Wholesale Dealer Authorisation (WDA(H)) requirements and pharmacy logistics

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Previous experience working in a hospital or community pharmacy at Band 3 level or equivalent
  • Experience of patient-orientated services with an understanding of patient care

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of supervising the day-to-day running of an operational area
  • Experience of training and supporting staff development
