About the role
Compounding Chemist is a specialist pharmacy focused on personalised and compounded medicines.
We are looking for a Pharmacist Manager / QA Pharmacist to join our team at our Canvey Island facility.
This is a varied role combining pharmacy management, Responsible Pharmacist duties and Quality Assurance, making it ideal for a pharmacist who wants to develop experience beyond traditional pharmacy practice and gain exposure to pharmaceutical quality, compounding and production.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the pharmacy, support the compounding and dispensing teams, act as Responsible Pharmacist (RP) when required, and play an important role in maintaining and developing our quality systems.
Previous pharmaceutical industry, QA or compounding experience is desirable but not essential, and full training will be provided.
Key responsibilities
Pharmacy management and Responsible Pharmacist duties
- Managing the day-to-day operation of the pharmacy
- Acting as the Responsible Pharmacist and ensuring the safe and effective running of the pharmacy
- Ensuring pharmacy activities are carried out in accordance with GPhC standards, legislation, company policies and SOPs
- Providing professional oversight of dispensing and pharmacy operations
- Supporting and supervising pharmacists, dispensers, compounding staff and other members of the pharmacy team
- Ensuring appropriate staffing, workflow and workload management
- Supporting staff training, development and competency assessments
- Ensuring prescriptions are clinically and legally appropriate before supply
- Supporting the management of incidents, complaints, errors and near misses
- Maintaining appropriate pharmacy records and governance documentation
- Helping ensure the pharmacy remains inspection-ready and compliant with regulatory requirements
- Working closely with the directors and senior management on operational and quality improvements

Quality Assurance
- Carrying out quality assurance and final release activities for compounded medicines
- Reviewing prescriptions, formulations and supporting documentation
- Reviewing batch records and ensuring documentation is completed accurately
- Supporting quality checks throughout the compounding and dispensing process
- Ensuring work is carried out in accordance with SOPs and quality procedures
- Investigating errors, deviations and quality issues
- Supporting CAPA and continuous quality improvement activities
- Supporting the development, review and maintenance of SOPs and quality documentation
- Assisting with internal audits and regulatory compliance
- Identifying opportunities to improve pharmacy and production processes
- Working closely with pharmacists, dispensers and the compounding team to maintain high standards of quality and patient safety
Requirements
- Current GPhC registration as a pharmacist
- Ability and willingness to act as Responsible Pharmacist
- Strong leadership and organisational skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Good documentation and record-keeping skills
- Confidence supervising and supporting a pharmacy team
- Good understanding of pharmacy governance, professional standards and patient safety
- An interest in pharmaceutical quality, compounding and medicines production
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a busy pharmacy environment
- Good communication and problem-solving skills
- Full UK driving licence and access to your own car, as reliable travel to the Canvey Island site is required

Desirable experience
Experience in any of the following would be beneficial, but is not essential:
- Pharmacy management or significant team leadership experience
- Responsible Pharmacist duties
- Team leadership or staff supervision
- Compounding pharmacy

- Quality Assurance or Quality Control
- Specials or personalised medicines
- SOP development
- Audits and quality systems
- Incident investigation and CAPA
- Regulatory inspections or pharmacy governance
The role would suit an experienced community or hospital pharmacist looking for greater responsibility, as well as a pharmacist interested in developing a career within Quality Assurance, pharmaceutical production, manufacturing or compounding.
