Summary
This is a serious first step into a healthcare career, not a stopgap job. Over 18 months we will invest significant time and money in training you, and in return we need someone who genuinely wants to build a career in community pharmacy.

- £15,392 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
The right person is someone who:
- Wants to work in pharmacy specifically — not just "any job in healthcare"
- Is ready to commit to the full 18-month programme and see it through
- Will study at home to hit coursework deadlines, alongside working full-time
- Turns up reliably, on time, every day — a pharmacy cannot open a dispensary short-staffed
- Is comfortable being the person a patient trusts with something personal
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
- Prepare and dispense prescription medication accurately, under the supervision of a registered pharmacist
- Support the pharmacist in delivering NHS and private clinical services safely and effectively
- Learn to interpret and process prescriptions in line with legal and regulatory standards
- Maintain accurate, confidential patient records and help manage repeat prescriptions and medication synchronisation
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures, spot when something does not look right, and escalate it
- Work alongside GPs, nurses and other healthcare professionals to support good patient outcomes
- Keep your clinical knowledge and mandatory training current
Stock and retail
- Manage stock levels — ordering, receiving, checking in and organising medicines, OTC products and healthcare lines
- Build working relationships with wholesalers and help us buy well
- Keep shelves stocked, labelled and in date, and remove expired or recalled products in line with guidance
- Set up promotional displays and seasonal health campaigns
- Carry out stock audits
- Help the team hit daily and weekly NHS and private service targets
Shop floor and daily operations
- Support opening and closing procedures, cash handling and till reconciliation
- Keep the shop floor clean, tidy and well presented
- Unpack deliveries, restock shelves and keep storage areas organised
- Work with the rest of the team to keep the workflow moving during busy periods
Customer service
- Greet every customer warmly and deal with enquiries patiently and professionally
- Give sound, appropriate advice on OTC medicines and health products, referring to the pharmacist when needed
- Process transactions accurately on the pharmacy's POS system
- Resolve complaints and concerns calmly, and know when to bring in a colleague
- Explain to patients how to use their medicines correctly, and promote the services we offer

- Create simple, engaging content — short videos, photos, stories — that shows what we do and who we are
- Promote our NHS and private services, seasonal campaigns (flu, travel clinic, weight management) and new product lines
- Monitor comments and messages, respond promptly and politely, and pass anything clinical straight to the pharmacist
- Help grow and keep our local following, and flag reviews — good or bad — to the team
Work within GPhC and ASA rules at all times: no patient images or information, no photographs of prescriptions or the dispensary, and nothing published without a pharmacist's sign-off where it touches on medicines or health claims.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Receive and log prescriptions
- Assemble prescribed items, undertake an in-process accuracy check and issue prescribed items
- Work according to legislative requirements, and organisational policies
- Order, receive, maintain and issue pharmaceutical stock
- Provide appropriate advice when authorised on supplied medicines and products, their storage and disposal
- Work within the parameters of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the pharmacy
- Act in accordance with systems and organisational governance
- Recognise and act within the pharmacy regulatory, legal and ethical standards
- Support the team in the development of others
- Maintain and further develop your own skills and knowledge through development activities; maintain evidence of your personal development and actively prepare for and participate in appraisal
- Communicate effectively with the public, carers and other health and social care professionals using a range of techniques to determine their needs, and keep information confidential
- Handle information (record, report and store information) related to individuals and/or patients in line with local and national policies
- Use pharmacy IT systems and other IT resources according to legislative requirements and organisational policies
- Demonstrate person centred care and support within a pharmacy setting
- Make pharmacy patients and patient safety your first concern
- Use judgement and refer service user as appropriate to another member of the team, GP, healthcare worker, manufacturer etc
- Maintain the interests of patients and the health of the public
- Promote and advocate equality, diversity and inclusion
- Promote healthy lifestyles to customers
- Work safely within the parameters of your role using Standard Operating Procedures
- Apply policies which relate to health and safety at work
- Act appropriately in situations to prevent harm to yourself and others

Requirements
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English and Maths (grade 4 (C) or above)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
Essential
- Right to work in the UK
- Not currently enrolled in full-time education or another government-funded training programme (an apprenticeship eligibility requirement)
- No existing qualification at Level 2 or above in pharmacy services
Desirable
- GCSE grade 4 or above in Science
- Previous customer-facing or retail experience of any kind
