I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Qualifications
- Strong foundation in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or a closely related discipline, with knowledge of power electronics and PCB design principles.
- Experience with artificial intelligence or machine learning methods (e.g., supervised and unsupervised learning, optimization algorithms, deep learning) and their application to engineering problems.
- Proficiency in relevant programming and simulation tools (such as Python, MATLAB, or similar), and familiarity with PCB design and electronic CAD software is highly beneficial.
- Ability to conduct independent research: skills in problem formulation, literature review, experimental or simulation design, data analysis, and scientific writing.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly, collaborate in multidisciplinary environments, and manage time and project milestones.
- Normally a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree (or international equivalent); a relevant master’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field is an advantage.
