Role Description
The PhD Studentship is a hybrid research role based primarily at the Cambridge or Chelmsford campus, with flexibility for some work from home. The candidate will conduct original research under the supervision of Dr. P Kirkman, Dr. C HO, and A Starr. This will include designing studies, collecting and analyzing data, and reviewing relevant literature. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

- Preparing written work
- Conducting fieldwork (including travel)
- Attending team meetings
- Presenting findings at seminars or conferences
- Contributing to the academic life of the School of Education
The role may also involve limited teaching, assisting with tutorials or workshops, and supporting collaborative projects with internal and external partners. The studentship requires regular progress reporting, participation in training and development activities, and adherence to ethical and institutional research guidelines.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated research aptitude, including critical thinking, academic writing, and ability to conduct literature reviews and data analysis.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to plan, execute, and complete long-term research projects independently.
- Effective communication skills for presenting research, collaborating with supervisors and peers, and contributing to scholarly discussions.
- Experience or potential in disseminating research through conference presentations, journal articles, or other academic outputs.
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline; exceptional bachelor’s graduates with strong research potential may also be considered.
- Ability to work in a hybrid environment, attending on-campus activities in Cambridge and managing remote work responsibly.
- Commitment to ethical research practice, openness to interdisciplinary collaboration, and willingness to engage with ARU’s diverse community.
- Proficiency in relevant research methodologies and, where appropriate, quantitative or qualitative analysis software is an advantage.
