Role Description

This full-time, on-site PhD Studentship in offshore wind structures is based at the University of Birmingham in Birmingham, UK. The doctoral researcher will conduct original research on the design, analysis, and performance of offshore wind support structures, including numerical modelling, experimental work, and data analysis. Day-to-day tasks may include reviewing scientific literature, developing and validating models, performing simulations or laboratory tests, and preparing publications and conference presentations. The role also involves collaborating with academic staff, industry partners, and other researchers, attending seminars and training sessions, and contributing to the wider research community within the university. The successful candidate will be expected to manage their project timeline, document research outcomes, and work toward the completion of a PhD thesis within the agreed period.

  • Strong foundation in engineering or a related discipline (e.g., civil, mechanical, marine, offshore, or structural engineering), supported by a good undergraduate or master’s degree.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis, mechanics, and materials behaviour relevant to offshore or wind energy structures.
  • Experience with numerical modelling and simulation tools (such as finite element analysis software or similar engineering packages).
  • Ability to design and conduct experiments, collect data, and apply appropriate statistical or analytical methods.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports, journal articles, and presenting research findings.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and the capacity to work independently while collaborating effectively within a research team.
  • Interest in offshore renewable energy, sustainability, and the advancement of wind energy technologies.
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary work and interact with academic and industry stakeholders.
  • Eligibility to meet the University of Birmingham’s PhD admission requirements and, where relevant, funding or residency criteria.
