Freelance PHP Developer
Client Location - West Sussex, UK
Remote work offering - Hybrid, onsite minimum 1 day p/w
Initial Contract Length - 6 months
Contract type - Contract, Outside IR35
We're looking for an experienced PHP Developer to support and enhance a portfolio of established web applications used by a large customer base. The role combines ongoing development, maintenance, integrations, and platform improvements, with a focus on reliability, security, and performance.
Environment
You'll be working across a portfolio of long-established PHP applications running in production. The systems include third-party integrations, SSO authentication, scheduled data processing, and customer-facing platforms. Current priorities include application enhancements, security updates, PHP version upgrades, CI/CD implementation, and ongoing infrastructure modernization.

Skills Required
- Strong PHP development experience
- Good MySQL/database skills
- Experience working with Linux-hosted applications
- REST API integration experience
- OAuth2 authentication knowledge
- Git and GitHub experience
- CI/CD knowledge (GitHub Actions desirable)
- Experience supporting and troubleshooting live applications
- Ability to work directly with stakeholders and gather requirements
- Experience using Claude for AI Development

Desirable
- SAML / SSO experience
- Cloud platform experience (AWS)
- Docker or containerization knowledge
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and enhance PHP applications and integrations.
- Investigate and resolve software defects, performance issues, and production incidents.
- Deliver application upgrades, dependency updates, and security improvements.
- Build and improve automated deployment and CI/CD processes.
- Work with stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
