Job Title
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a PHP Engineer based in United Kingdom.
About the Role
Join a fully remote engineering team working on a mature internal platform that supports the creation and publication of intelligence content.
- You’ll help maintain and modernize a production Laravel application while contributing across both backend and frontend technologies.
- The role combines hands-on development with opportunities to improve testing, observability, tooling, and deployment practices.
- You’ll play an important part in gradually moving an established system toward a modern cloud platform.
- With significant autonomy, you’ll have the opportunity to make thoughtful improvements while keeping a dependable production environment running smoothly.
- You’ll collaborate closely with platform and DevOps specialists as well as distributed colleagues across multiple regions.
This role is well suited to a pragmatic, full-stack-minded engineer who values quality, ownership, and methodical modernization.
Accountabilities
- Develop, maintain, and improve production features across the PHP/Laravel backend and JavaScript, CSS, and HTML frontend.
- Maintain and modernize the application while ensuring changes are introduced safely and sustainably.
- Keep PHP, Laravel, and other application dependencies current, including managing safe framework and version upgrades.
- Improve automated testing, observability, developer tooling, CI, and deployment automation to support reliable software delivery.
- Investigate, triage, and resolve production incidents, defects, and technical issues through structured debugging and root-cause analysis.
- Contribute to the modernization and migration of the application onto a cloud platform in collaboration with platform and DevOps teams.
- Document system behavior, dependencies, operational procedures, and runbooks to improve knowledge sharing and maintainability.
- Work autonomously on assigned priorities while taking ownership of delivering reliable technical solutions.
- Provide regular updates on progress, priorities, risks, and technical developments.
- Collaborate with distributed teams across Europe, the United States, South America, and Asia while adapting effectively to diverse professional and cultural environments.
- Participate in occasional travel as required by the role.

Requirements
- Significant professional experience building and maintaining production PHP applications and systems.
- Strong hands-on experience with the Laravel framework, including safe framework and dependency upgrades.
- Working knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, with the ability to contribute to an established frontend.
- Demonstrated ability to improve and evolve mature codebases safely rather than relying on complete rewrites.
- Strong debugging, incident-response, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis capabilities.
- Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL.
- Strong experience with Git, CI/CD workflows, automated testing, and disciplined software development practices.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership of assigned work, and collaborate effectively with platform and DevOps specialists.
- Professional written and spoken English at B2 level or above.
- Experience with system migration or modernization projects is desirable.
- Familiarity with Kafka or other message queues, S3 or similar object storage, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS is an advantage.
- Experience with security hardening and dependency management is beneficial.
- Exposure to cybersecurity threat intelligence, data pipelines, or high-volume data ingestion systems is a plus.
- React experience is desirable and may provide opportunities to contribute to additional frontend platforms.
- Comfort using AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude or Codex is advantageous.
- Strong communication, collaboration, reliability, and problem-solving skills.
