About us
Chrysalis Finance is the UK's largest finance provider in the medical and dental sectors. Our Automatic Lending Platform (ALP) handles the full loan lifecycle: applications, automated credit decisioning, loan management and payments. It integrates with credit reference agencies, lenders and payment providers. We're ISO27001 accredited and build with security first.
The role
We're hiring a mid-to-senior PHP engineer to work on our core lending platform. The codebase is mature and moves real money under FCA regulation. The work is full-stack but mostly backend PHP. You'll build features across:
- Our automated decision engine, loan management and payment processing
- Integrations with credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax), lenders and payment gateways
- Customer and retailer portals
We're an AI-forward team. We use Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor and AI-assisted code review every day. You'll use them too, and you'll own and understand every line you ship.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain features in our multi-application Yii2 platform (300+ ActiveRecord models)
- Build and harden third-party integrations and webhook handlers
- Work on our event-driven workflows, rule-based decision engine and queue-based background jobs
- Optimise MySQL queries and Redis caching
- Build RESTful APIs for internal and external consumers
- Write unit and functional tests with Codeception
- Review code, both human-written and AI-generated, with a focus on security and correctness
- Debug production issues involving financial transactions

Essential
- 3+ years of professional PHP development, using modern PHP (8.1+)
- Solid MVC/OOP fundamentals. Yii2 is a big plus, but if you're strong in Laravel, Symfony or Zend, we'll help you pick it up.
- Strong MySQL: complex queries, indexing, transactions, migrations
- RESTful API design, authentication (API keys, OAuth), queues and Redis caching
- CSS (Flexbox, Grid), responsive and mobile-first front-end work
- Git, Docker and a testing mindset
- Comfortable reading and improving a large, legacy codebase
- Able to critically review AI-generated code

Highly desirable
- Day-to-day use of AI coding assistants
- Fintech, lending or financial services experience: credit decisioning, affordability, payments (Direct Debit/BACS, cards, Faster Payments)
- Knowledge of FCA and GDPR requirements
- Vue.js 3
- Event-driven architectures, rule engines and multi-tenant SaaS
- Open Banking, CAIS credit reporting, TypeScript, CI/CD
