Your Role

Are you a seasoned PL/1 professional looking for one final challenge where your expertise will truly make a difference?

We are seeking an experienced PL/1 Developer to play a pivotal role in the modernisation of a business-critical legacy application. This is a unique opportunity to apply years of hard-earned knowledge to reverse engineer and analyse a complex system, uncovering how its functions, procedures, modules, interfaces, and program calls work together to support essential business operations.

Your expertise will be instrumental in guiding the migration of the underlying database from Datacom (Broadcom) to VSAM, helping ensure valuable business functionality is preserved, understood, and thoroughly tested throughout the transition.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, documenting and sharing knowledge, and leaving a lasting impact on a significant transformation programme. Whether you're currently consulting, semi-retired, or simply looking for a role where your specialist skills are genuinely valued, we'd love to hear from you.

We can offer flexibility to suit your lifestyle, including part-time arrangements, and the role can be based in Wellington, Auckland, or Christchurch. The focus is on finding the right person with the right experience, not fitting them into a rigid working model.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyse and reverse engineer PL/1 applications to understand and document how they work.
  • Map application workflows, program calls, interfaces, and data dependencies.
  • Support the migration from Datacom (Broadcom) to VSAM by identifying impacts and required code changes.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and specifications to support development and testing.
  • Work closely with developers, testers, architects, and business stakeholders to validate solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues within legacy PL/1 applications.
  • Provide guidance to ensure business processes are fully tested and protected throughout the migration.
  • Share knowledge and insights to help build a strong understanding of the application's design and behaviour.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
