Summary
Barnet Council is on the lookout for a seasoned Planning Officer to enhance its Planning and Building Control Service. This position is pivotal in delivering a top-notch, customer-centric planning service that aligns with the Council's strategic goals. The chosen candidate will handle a diverse range of planning tasks, ensuring that applications and related issues are processed efficiently and in compliance with relevant laws and policies. The Planning Service's rotation programme offers a chance to gain experience in various planning specialisms and areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate and decide on planning applications and related submissions.
- Offer expert planning advice to applicants, residents, councillors, and stakeholders.
- Prepare reports, recommendations, and planning assessments.
- Ensure planning decisions comply with legislation, local policies, and national guidelines.
- Handle a diverse caseload of planning matters.
- Engage in the Planning Service rotation programme and support various specialist areas as needed.
- Conduct site visits and planning inspections.
- Communicate with consultees, developers, residents, and other stakeholders.
- Represent the service at meetings and planning-related events when necessary.
- Contribute to service improvement initiatives and best practices.
- Support the objectives of the Planning and Building Control service.
- Maintain accurate records and manage case information.

Essential Requirements
- Experience in a Planning Service, Local Authority, or related planning environment.
- Strong understanding of:
- Town and Country Planning
- Planning Policy
- Development Management
- Planning Legislation and Guidance
- Experience in assessing planning applications and preparing reports.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and customer service skills.
- Exceptional organizational and analytical skills.
- Capability to work independently and collaboratively.

Desirable
- Degree or qualification in Town Planning or a related field.
- Membership of RTPI or progress towards professional accreditation.
- Experience in Local Government planning.
- Exposure to multiple planning disciplines.
Working Arrangements
- Hybrid working setup.
- Mandatory office presence every Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Occasional travel outside the Borough may be required to fulfill Barnet Council's services.
- Full-time role.
