The Role
Working as part of the Good Morning Britain planning team, you’ll help shape the programme’s forward agenda, identifying the stories, guests and opportunities that will get people talking.

You’ll look ahead, develop original ideas and secure exclusive guests, case studies and access for future programmes. You’ll help keep GMB ahead of the news agenda, finding distinctive ways to bring stories to life and ensuring there’s compelling content ready for broadcast.
As well as chasing guests from the newsroom, you’ll spend time on location building contacts, and finding the people who can bring stories to life. You’ll build trust with contributors and work with them to ensure they’re well prepared and that their experiences translate into strong, engaging television.
You’ll need strong editorial judgement, excellent organisation and the ability to juggle competing priorities in a fast-moving newsroom. Most of all, you’ll be curious, proactive and full of ideas, with the drive to spot an opportunity and turn it into something great for GMB.
Key Responsibilities
- Help drive and shape the forward planning agenda for Good Morning Britain
- Identify, develop and pursue strong story ideas for future programmes
- Keep across the news agenda and spot opportunities for original GMB treatments, interviews and live content
- Secure high-profile and relevant guests, contributors and case studies
- Develop original stories and opportunities that will help GMB stand out from the wider news agenda
- Plan and manage special projects, major news events and significant programme moments
- Build relationships with contributors, organisations, press teams and other external contacts to generate future stories and opportunities
- Work closely with programme teams to develop ideas from initial concept through to transmission
- Prioritise planning time effectively, balancing immediate programme requirements with longer-term opportunities
- Write clear, concise and comprehensive handovers for colleagues across the programme
- Ensure guests, contributors and stories reflect the diversity of the UK and the audience we broadcast to
- Brief and deploy editorial and technical colleagues where required
- Support colleagues working in the field and ensure they have the information and resources required to deliver planned coverage
- Maintain strong awareness of developing and breaking stories and adapt forward plans accordingly
- On occasion, produce stories or live coverage on location and provide cover across other editorial roles where required

Key Requirements
- Strong editorial judgement and a thorough understanding of the UK news and current affairs agenda
- Proven experience of generating, developing and delivering compelling editorial ideas
- A strong instinct for identifying stories, guests and opportunities that will engage a broad morning television audience
- Excellent guest-booking and relationship-building skills
- The ability to turn an initial idea into a fully developed proposition for transmission
- Excellent communication skills and confidence working with colleagues and contacts at all levels
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple stories and competing deadlines
- Strong attention to detail
- The ability to work calmly and make clear editorial decisions in a fast-paced newsroom environment
- A collaborative approach and the ability to enthuse colleagues about stories and ideas
- A good understanding of television production and newsgathering requirements, including live and location-based broadcasting
- A clear understanding of Ofcom regulations, editorial compliance and the ITN Compliance Manual
- Awareness of health and safety requirements when planning and delivering coverage
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of the financial implications of editorial and production decisions
- An understanding of Good Morning Britain, ITV and ITN, including the programme’s audience, tone and editorial priorities
