Plant Controller Role
We are seeking an experienced Plant Controller to join a leading international manufacturing business and take responsibility for the financial performance and control of a major UK manufacturing site.
As the key Finance Business Partner to the Plant Manager, you will have a highly visible role focused on profitability, cost competitiveness and operational performance.
You will work closely with plant leadership, procurement, engineering and supply chain, combining hands-on financial controlling with commercial business partnering and continuous improvement.
The role is based on-site in Worthing, West Sussex.
Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK and able to work on-site at the manufacturing facility.
You will manage a small finance team and report to the Global Manufacturing Controller.
Key Responsibilities of the Plant Controller:
- Act as the primary Finance Business Partner to the Plant Manager, providing financial insight on plant performance, costs, productivity and profitability, and supporting operational decision-making
- Lead monthly reporting, forecasting and annual budgeting, including manufacturing cost variances, labour and overhead rates, standard costing, accruals, Capex and inventory planning
- Analyse material, labour and production variances, including purchase price variances, scrap, inventory adjustments and subcontractor costs, identifying root causes and driving corrective actions with plant management
- Identify and track cost-reduction and productivity opportunities, including make-versus-buy analysis, labour efficiency and working-capital improvements
- Ensure strong financial controls across the plant, including accurate month-end close, inventory and fixed-asset controls, appropriate capitalisation and compliance with internal approval requirements
- Partner closely with Procurement, Supply Chain, Engineering and Operations to improve manufacturing efficiency, manage working capital and assess the financial impact of operational and product changes
- Lead and develop a small finance team, currently consisting of an Assistant Plant Controller and Plant Analyst, while maintaining high standards of financial discipline and accountability

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
