Job Purpose

To coordinate and control the hire, off-hire and movement of construction plant, tools and equipment, ensuring sites have the right equipment when required while maintaining effective control of costs, utilisation and records.

The company is introducing inspHire as its plant and hire management system. Experience of inspHire or a similar system is highly desirable. We are particularly interested in someone who can use previous systems experience to help lead its implementation, establish effective processes and support successful adoption within the Plant Department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with site and project teams to identify plant and equipment requirements
  • Source equipment from the company fleet where available and arrange external hire when required.
  • Coordinate deliveries, transfers, collections, hires and off-hires.
  • Maintain accurate plant locations, hire periods, movements and supplier information within the management system.
  • Monitor plant utilisation and promptly off-hire equipment that is no longer required to avoid unnecessary costs.
  • Obtain quotations, negotiate competitive hire rates and maintain effective supplier relationships.
  • Check hire charges and assist with resolving invoice or hire-record discrepancies.
  • Coordinate plant breakdowns, repairs, servicing, replacements and exchanges with workshops and suppliers.
  • Support forward planning of plant requirements and identify opportunities to improve utilisation and reduce external hire costs.
  • Help lead the implementation and ongoing development of inspHire, including system processes, data accuracy and good working practices.

Health & Safety

  • Ensure hired plant and equipment has appropriate inspection, maintenance and certification records, including LOLER and PUWER requirements where applicable.
  • Work with site teams to ensure plant is supplied for use by appropriately trained and competent personnel.
  • Record and act on defects, breakdowns and safety-related issues, arranging repair, replacement or isolation where required.
  • Coordinate deliveries and collections with due regard to safe loading, unloading, site access and company procedures.
  • Promote high standards of health and safety and report unsafe equipment or practices.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Previous experience within plant hire, construction, civil engineering or a closely related environment.
  • Experience coordinating plant hire/off-hire and dealing with suppliers and site personnel.
  • Previous experience supporting or leading the implementation or development of a business system.
  • Good knowledge of construction plant, machinery, tools and equipment.
  • Strong organisational, communication and numeracy skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to control costs and manage competing priorities.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and electronic management systems.
  • Proactive, reliable and able to take ownership of issues through to resolution.

Desirable

  • Practical experience of inspHire or a similar plant/hire management system, ideally including implementation or process development.
  • Experience reviewing plant utilisation, controlling external hire costs and checking hire invoices.
  • Experience within the plant department of a construction or civil engineering contractor.
  • CSCS and/or relevant plant, LOLER or PUWER knowledge.

Key Requirement

As inspHire is new to the company, the successful candidate will ideally bring relevant systems experience and have the confidence to help lead the way in developing effective processes, accurate information and good working practices within the Plant Department.
