JOB DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the role is to be the focal point for all plant standards, safety, environmental and wellbeing matters within Costain Group related to plant equipment. Supporting the SLT and wider business on plant incidents and issues and plant & vehicle standards in line with industry practices and Climate Transition Plan.

The role is to liaise with and support the wider business contracts by looking into incidents and assist contract Leaders and SHE Managers regarding Plant and tools and the Procurement & Supply Chain Management Departments and in their Business-to-Business meetings and coordinating plant and vehicle SHE standards. To liaise with plant manufacturers and hire companies to be able to bring the latest industry standards to the business and assist where appropriate with trials. Ensure that Costain maintains collaborative working relationships with industry groups such as the Supply Chain Sustainability School (SCSS), Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS) and Contractors Plant-Hire Association (CPA) as well as training organization such as Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Must have an in-depth knowledge of earthmoving plant, construction equipment, including rail plant (where appropriate), vehicles and methods of operation.
  • Provide Support to the Group SHE System, Knowledge and Development Manager by:
    • Maintaining, updating and improving plant and vehicle SHE related process and procedures and documents within the Group SHE Management System and liaising to arrange implementation.
    • Maintaining and further develop the Plant and Vehicle Standards Manager role, network and future influence.
    • Coordinating with and supporting to address any plant and vehicle related entries to the SHE Development Portal as required.
  • Be the point of contact and representative or arrange suitable representation at the Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS) safety forums, workshops and CLOCS associated business. Arrange renewal of CLOCS Champion Certificate annually via SHE central administration.
  • Represent Costain on relevant plant equipment consultation meetings with internal and external stakeholders and conferences such as, CECA, CPA, CITB, CEA, etc. as deemed relevant.
  • Liaise with and support Procurement & Supply Chain Management Departments in coordinating plant and vehicle SHE standards.
  • Visit and liaise with plant manufacturers and hire companies to ensure latest innovation and developments are made available to Group in support of the Climate Change Action Plan and feed back into the business via the Plant Steering Group.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Significant experience of Operation, Maintenance and Supervision of Plant with SHE related experience including management and leadership.
  • Good working knowledge of CDM, LOLER and PUWER as well as other relevant H&S Legislation.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Extensive experience of relevant Operation, Maintenance and Supervision of Plant and SHE experience in construction/engineering industry and rail including extensive management and training of others experience.

Essential Qualifications

  • Safety, Health and Environmental Certificate or equivalent NVQ.
  • Plant Management Qualification and/or similar experience
  • Working towards CMIOSH or MIEMA or equivalent

Desirable Qualifications

  • Safety, Health and/or Environmental Diploma or NVQ equivalent.
  • Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5
  • Plant Management Qualification
  • Knowledge of relevant Network Rail Standards, Plant Operations Management, the Train Operations Manual procedures TMM001 to 005 and NR/L2/CTM/025
  • CMIOSH or MIEMA or equivalent
