Platform Automation Engineer — Python · Linux · Infrastructure as Code · London
Miller Maxwell is working with one of London's leading high-frequency trading firms — a business that builds virtually all of its own technology in-house rather than relying on third-party platforms. That same philosophy runs straight through into infrastructure.
The estate is predominantly bare-metal Linux servers, with selective virtualization and Windows across desktops and a handful of servers. There is an internally built provisioning platform already in place, a small cloud footprint, and a broad mandate to bring the whole stack under modern, code-driven management. This is not a role where you inherit someone else's Terraform modules and tweak variables — you will be shaping how the firm thinks about and operates its infrastructure for years to come.
Significant programmes of work are planned across 2026 and 2027. If you want genuine ownership and long-term scope, it is here.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What the Platform Automation Engineer will be doing:
- Own and evolve an internally built Python provisioning platform for Linux server management
- Introduce modern secrets management — replacing manual credential handling with Vault-compatible tooling
- Bring network and firewall configuration into version control, shipped via peer-reviewed pull requests
- Build a repeatable, hardened setup process for Windows desktops and select servers
- Improve application build, test, and release pipelines
- Pull a small cloud footprint under the same code-driven management as the rest of the estate
- Sharpen alerting and monitoring so faults are caught before they cause impact
What the Platform Automation Engineer will need:
- 5+ years of strong commercial Python — the primary language across the entire automation estate
- Hands-on Linux administration and infrastructure automation at scale
- Direct experience provisioning physical servers, not just virtualised environments
- Infrastructure as code mindset — config, networking, and builds treated as versioned, reviewable software
- Windows automation experience
- STEM degree or equivalent
- Financial services experience is not required, though a similarly demanding, high-stakes environment is a strong advantage.
