Prefect Platform Engineer – 6-Month Contract - £800pd Inside IR35
We are looking for an experienced Prefect Platform Engineer to join a major Energy Trading organisation in London on an initial six-month contract.
The business operates a large self-hosted Prefect estate, supporting approximately 50 clusters across 15 different team environments. They are now looking for a specialist to help modernise, harden and potentially migrate the platform from Prefect Open Source to Prefect Cloud.
This is a platform engineering role rather than a Python development position. You will need experience owning, maintaining or implementing Prefect as a platform—not simply building and deploying individual flows.
You will work with the existing engineering team to:
- Assess and improve the current self-hosted Prefect environment.
- Support a potential migration from Prefect Open Source to Prefect Cloud.
- Review and harden the AWS infrastructure underpinning the platform.
- Improve monitoring, alerting, patching and operational processes.
- Migrate secrets management to AWS Secrets Manager.
- Review and improve the ECS-based compute layer used to run containerised Python jobs.
- Produce runbooks, documentation and a sustainable operating model.
- Prepare the platform for handover to the internal platform engineering team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
