Platform Engineer – Berkshire, UK
GS Group are partnered with a growing technology-led business based in Berkshire who are looking for an experienced Platform Engineer to join their engineering function.
The business is developing its Platform Engineering capability and is looking for someone who can help move away from a traditional DevOps approach towards a more self-service, developer-focused platform model.
This is a hands-on role where you'll work closely with software development teams, understand their requirements and build the reusable infrastructure, automation and tooling that enables them to manage their own development-to-production journey.
Responsibilities
- Design, build and maintain reusable platform infrastructure, tooling and automation for internal engineering teams.
- Work directly with software developers to understand their requirements, challenges and pain points.
- Develop self-service solutions that allow development teams to deploy and manage their own applications with less reliance on central DevOps support.
- Build and maintain reusable infrastructure modules, pipelines, templates and deployment tooling.
- Establish consistent and scalable approaches to infrastructure and application delivery across multiple development teams.
- Own platform solutions throughout their lifecycle, including upgrades, improvements, documentation and adoption.
- Work closely with engineering teams to encourage adoption and continuously improve the developer experience.
- Identify repetitive or manual processes and turn them into automated, reusable solutions.
- Help shape the direction and standards of the wider Platform Engineering function.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

What we're looking for
The key distinction for this role is Platform Engineering rather than traditional DevOps. We're interested in people who have built tools and platforms that other engineering teams consume and own themselves, rather than primarily carrying out infrastructure or deployment work on behalf of those teams.
If you've worked closely with developers, identified problems in their development or deployment processes and built reusable solutions to allow them to work more independently, this could be a strong fit.
