Platform Engineer
£90,000 + cash benefits + bonus | Remote-first | 1 day per week in the office
A reputable financial services firm is looking for an experienced Platform Engineer to join an established engineering team and take ownership of the continued development and improvement of a large-scale cloud platform. This is a genuinely hands-on engineering role with a broad remit. The platform has been established for several years and is now being modernised, enhanced and prepared to scale further. There are multiple projects running across the platform, meaning the role offers plenty of variety rather than focusing on one narrow area.
The current environment is predominantly Microsoft Azure, with further expansion into AWS, particularly around newer AI capabilities. Multi-cloud experience would therefore be useful, although strong Azure experience is the priority.
The role
The successful engineer will work alongside existing senior platform engineers and take ownership of technical solutions from initial requirements through to delivery. This could involve:
- Designing and improving cloud platform environments and the infrastructure supporting them.
- Developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code, with an ongoing move from Bicep towards Terraform.
- Designing, configuring and enhancing Kubernetes platforms, including the wider technologies and services running within those clusters.
- Working on cloud networking, connectivity, security and platform architecture.
- Supporting the design and implementation of Disaster Recovery capabilities.
- Working with cloud databases and helping ensure they remain reliable, scalable and performant.
- Developing IAM templates and improving identity and access processes.
- Building automation and improving the way environments are provisioned and managed.
- Identifying areas where the existing platform can be made more scalable, resilient and efficient.
- Contributing to platform standards, engineering practices and reusable solutions.
- Taking ownership of technical projects and coordinating their delivery across multiple teams.

There is a strong emphasis on solution engineering and ownership. This isn't simply a role where requirements are handed over and the engineer implements them. The expectation is that you'll help understand the problem, shape the technical approach, develop a delivery plan and see it through.
What they are looking for
The most important requirement is strong, practical Kubernetes and cloud platform engineering experience.
You'll ideally have:
- Significant commercial experience working as a Platform Engineer, Cloud Engineer or similar.
- Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes, particularly building, configuring and enhancing Kubernetes environments. Azure AKS or AWS EKS experience would be highly relevant.
- Strong Terraform and/or Bicep experience, including designing infrastructure rather than simply consuming existing modules.
- Good knowledge of cloud networking, including VNets/VPCs, routing, firewalls, private connectivity, WAFs and security controls.
- Experience designing and operating Azure cloud platforms.
- Experience with CI/CD and automated infrastructure deployment.
- An understanding of containers, microservices and cloud-native architectures.
- Experience working with platform components and services deployed into Kubernetes environments, such as Kafka or similar technologies.
- Good understanding of cloud security, IAM and access management.
- Experience with monitoring, logging and observability.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work across a varied technical environment.

Experience with AWS alongside Azure would be advantageous, particularly for engineers who have worked in genuine multi-cloud environments.
This role needs someone operating comfortably at a senior engineering level. Technical ability is important, but so is ownership. You'll need to be comfortable taking responsibility for a piece of work, engaging with different stakeholders, explaining technical options, agreeing an approach and driving the resulting delivery. It's a good fit for someone who enjoys variety and wants to be involved in how a platform evolves, rather than concentrating solely on keeping an existing environment running.

£90,000 base salary + bash benefits + bonus
