Opticore IT is a specialist Network Engineer and Project Management consultancy offering a wide variety of opportunities to work within fast-paced, challenging environments across our client base spanning multiple sectors, including Finance, Broadcast Media, Telecommunications, and more.
Opticore IT is currently searching for Platform Engineers with strong AWS, CloudFormation, and PowerShell experience. You'll join our excellent team, based in the London area, with 2 days a week on-site. This is a 6-month contract, inside IR35, with scope to extend. This is an 18 - 24 month project.
A Bit About the Opportunity
Evolve and operate the Enterprise Platform product set across AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premise workloads, driving automation-first engineering to keep corporate application hosting efficient, stable, and secure while continuously reducing manual toil.
What You'll Be Doing
- Provision, scale, and optimise infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and GCP, spanning IaaS, PaaS, and foundational services.
- Develop the Enterprise Platforms product set through Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation) and configuration management tooling (Puppet) to solve infrastructure operations problems and reduce manual toil.
- Administer and harden a mixed estate of Windows Server, RHEL, and Rocky Linux, primarily through automation with scope for hands-on work in the legacy environment.
- Day-to-day operation in cloud environments (AWS FSx, S3, EC2).
- Support and automate the platform aspects of VDI infrastructure via AWS WorkSpaces and AppStream.
- Implement observability with LogicMonitor to track SLIs and SLOs, and manage enterprise-grade backup and recovery via Commvault.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, leveraging GitHub Copilot to accelerate scripting and automation tasks.
- Participate in the in-hours front-door rota (emergency response, small engineering requests, FinOps, and SecOps) and the out-of-hours P1 and major P2 rota, cyclically 1 week in 5.
- Codify central infrastructure automation for Windows Server, Linux, and SQL Server using Puppet, PowerShell, and Python.
- Provide consultancy to business and application teams, defining non-functional requirements and producing high-quality technical documentation to support engineering work.
- Participate in lifecycle and release management to keep platforms N-1 or better, with effective blast radius protection during change.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You'll Bring
- Extensive experience with AWS PaaS & Public Cloud Platform Engineering. Practical experience of working with AWS PaaS services in an enterprise hosting context, comfortable with core AWS building blocks for corporate application platforms.
- Solid experience with PowerShell Automation & API Integration. Excellent PowerShell automation experience, including working with APIs to integrate platform components and drive engineering work at scale.
- Working knowledge of Windows Server or Linux. Demonstrable technical understanding of either Windows Server or Linux (RHEL / Rocky), backed by operational experience in a second stack drawn from Windows Server, Linux, or SQL Server.
- Strong background in Platform Engineering Practice (IaC & Config Management). Production experience of orchestration, automation, and software configuration management tooling. Puppet is ideal; adjacent IaC exposure with CloudFormation (preferred) or Terraform supports this.
