Platform Engineering Manager (Cloud Foundations)
About the Role
Rightmove’s Cloud Foundations team delivers the secure, reliable, scalable and cost-optimised platform foundations used by hundreds of engineers and dozens of mission-critical services.
The Platform Engineering Manager will lead a team providing cloud platforms and infrastructure, cloud security, governance, automation, and operational excellence. This role blends people leadership, cloud operations, platform engineering, security governance, and FinOps.
You’ll drive the cloud platform strategy and roadmap to align Rightmove’s business goals and internal customer needs, ensuring safe, low-friction delivery of core services at scale.
Responsibilities
Strategy, Delivery & Execution
- Work with the team, key stakeholders, and the platform product manager to provide a cloud platform strategy and roadmap that aligns with Rightmove’s goals.
- Ensure accurate estimates and realistic plans for platform initiatives.
- Manage platform roadmaps, projects, and OKRs effectively, delivering results on time.
- Align initiatives with evolving business and technical needs.
People Leadership & Team Development
- Coach and mentor engineers to develop skills, confidence, and impact through clear goal-setting and feedback.
- Align individual growth plans with team objectives and organisational priorities.
- Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe culture with leadership tailored to individual strengths.
- Support engineers in designing and delivering scalable, secure, resilient platform services while minimising micromanagement.
- Recognise and reward achievement, address performance issues early, and fairly.
Platform Engineering, Operations & Reliability
- Ensure cloud platform reliability, proactive monitoring, and complete observability.
- Define and maintain disaster recovery (DR) planning/testing working across the business.
- Regularly test backup, restore, and resilience mechanisms to guarantee predictable recovery.
- Follow consistent incident management, including timely post-incident reviews (PIRs) and actioned follow-ups.
- Sustain a healthy on-call culture with proper rotations and training.
- Implement automation (AI- or traditional-based) to increase speed, reduce manual toil, and enhance reliability.
- Prioritise and resolve support requests efficiently, reducing upstream impact.
- Optimise cloud spend by avoiding under-/over-provisioning and embedding a FinOps culture with tooling across teams.
- Manage vendor relationships, supplier due diligence, contract costs, and SLAs.
- Foster a continuous improvement culture where performance, reliability, and cost efficiency are regularly reviewed and optimised.

Governance, Guardrails & Security
- Implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IAC), Policy-as-Code, and automated guardrails for strengthened governance and consistency.
- Follow secure software delivery practices, manage vulnerabilities within SLAs, and maintain CIS Benchmark standards.
- Enforce cloud security policies, governance, and privacy controls, ensuring least privilege IAM principles are implemented.
- Maintain compliance documentation, policies, and process evidence for regulatory, contractual, and audit obligations.
- Implement and maintain secure cloud configurations, WAF policies, bot protection, and cloud-native security tooling.
- Keep up-to-date architecture diagrams for networks and key components, supporting audit, security, and knowledge-sharing needs.
Requirements
- Proven experience managing cloud operations and platform engineering, overseeing infrastructure, security, monitoring, and production deliveries.
- Experience supporting large-scale cloud-based website environments with:
- GKE, service mesh
- Load balancers, CDN/WAF
- Kafka, Kafka Streams, and Elasticsearch
- Expertise in cloud services—networking, compute, storage, containerisation, security, and IAM.
- Hands-on experience with:
- IAC (Terraform, IaC frameworks)
- Python, Go, or similar scripting languages
- CI/CD pipelines
- Kubernetes and modern operational tooling (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana)
- Experience implementing security controls, IAM policies, and governance frameworks.
- Understanding of platform engineering concepts, supporting developer platforms, reusable components, and internal product teams.
- Experience improving operational processes and documentation (e.g., monitoring, DR, incident response, upgrades).
- Strong leadership, team management, and communication skills—aligned with cloud operational team expectations.
- Experience designing scalable, reliable cloud architectures following modern frameworks (e.g., Cloud Native, FinOps).
