Role Overview
As a Platform Specialist on the Database team, you will play a crucial technical role in delivering highly available, high-performance and scalable data infrastructure that supports trading and research, using the DevOps methodology. You will be part of a global systems team, working closely with development, investment and infrastructure teams to design, deploy and support cross-platform database solutions across relational and analytical engines.
You will have the opportunity to make a significant impact by treating databases as a service: automating provisioning, upgrades, patching and recovery so that teams get reliable, secure and consistent data platforms without manual effort. This is a hands-on engineering role, and you will be comfortable moving between deep database administration and automation, and between traditional servers and containerised platforms. The day to day will consist of:
- Database Operations: Running resilient, well-tuned production clusters, including replication, failover, backup and recovery.
- Automation & Delivery: Building tested, repeatable automation and pipelines for deploying and maintaining database estates.
- Platform Migration: Evolving database platforms from traditional infrastructure towards container-based deployment.
- Security & Compliance: Protecting sensitive data through hardened configuration, encryption, auditing and timely patching.
- Observability & Reliability: Monitoring, alerting and runbooks that keep service levels high and reduce operational noise.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
