I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Develop Your Career with BTP
A career as a Police Community Support Officer is rewarding and important in its own right.
PCSOs play a vital role in neighbourhood policing, safeguarding vulnerable people, solving problems within communities, and building public trust and confidence across the railway network.
British Transport Police is committed to supporting your long-term development. You will have opportunities to broaden your knowledge, strengthen your operational skills, and explore career development opportunities across the organisation.
If you later decide to pursue a career as a Police Constable, successful completion of your PCSO probationary period will also satisfy the work experience requirement for the Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP).
This is one of several possible development opportunities available to you and does not diminish the importance or professional standing of the PCSO role.
