Every police officer remembers the moment they chose to step forward.
For some, it was wanting to protect the vulnerable. For others, it was a desire to serve their community with pride. For you, that moment might be now.
The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA)
The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) is a three-year, fully funded route that lets you earn, learn and serve from day one. You’ll become a warranted officer immediately, gaining real operational experience while working towards a BSc (Hons) in Professional Policing Practice.
Frontline policing, academic learning and personal development in one powerful journey. You’ll be supported, challenged and trusted and you’ll grow faster than you ever expected.
What Your Path Will Look Like
Year One — Learning the Foundations
Your story begins with a blended programme delivered by Thames Valley Police and our Higher Education Institute. You'll spend time at one of our training centres in Sulhamstead (near Reading) or Kidlington (near Oxford), learning the essentials of policing including Officer Safety, Arrest procedures, Stop and Search and Community engagement.
Then you’ll join your Local Command Unit, supported by experienced officers as you gain Independent Patrol Status.
Year Two — Growing Your Operational Confidence
You’ll gain deeper operational exposure, including Response Policing, Investigations, Community Policing and Intelligence.
You may be selected to join a specialist attachment in the Assessment & Investigation Unit or Neighbourhood Policing.
Year Three — Becoming a Fully Competent Officer
You will further develop your operational and professional practice while completing an evidence-based research project focused on a policing issue relevant to operational policing.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
