Salary Range: $26 - $35.13/ hour, DOE, DOQ

General

Under the general supervision of the Patrol Sergeant, Police Commander, and/or Chief of Police, performs a variety of police duties in enforcing municipal, state, and federal ordinances and statutes necessary for the protection of life, safety, welfare, and property of persons within the city.

Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Incident evaluation: responds to or initiates call for service; obtains information and evaluates same to determine course of action; identifies and preserves evidence; protects personal and public property
• Interview/Interrogation: interview victims, witnesses, complainants, suspicious persons, informants, medical personnel, prisoners, etc.; makes legal admonishments; interrogates suspects
• Arrest/detention/searches: approaches, detains and/or apprehends suspects; effects arrests; restrains and subdues prisoners and members of the public as required to accomplish specific tasks
• Public interaction: provides information and/or explanations to those contacted; maintains appropriate courtesy and professional presence; provides referrals, mediates disputes, controls crowds; performs public speaking engagements and attends public meetings as assigned; assists in the implementation of crime prevention programs as developed by this department
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors

Responsibilities

• Directly responsible to the Patrol Sergeant, Commander, and /or Chief of Police.
• Responsible for ensuring that all duty items listed previously are performed properly, efficiently, and in a timely manner
• Responsible for the proper care of city-owned equipment used during the discharge of duties and responsibilities of this position
• Responsible for proper notification of supervisors for repairs or replacement of equipment or supplies
• Responsible for needed and necessary follow up on traffic accidents, incident and offense reports
• Responsible for writing necessary and timely traffic accident, incident, and offense reports
• Responsible for familiarizing self with jurisdictional area and boundaries
• Responsible for familiarizing self with the people living in the area
• Responsible for learning, understanding, and maintaining a working knowledge of municipal ordinances, state statutes, and federal regulations and laws
• Responsible for positive public relations while adhering to responsibilities to duty
• Responsible for cooperating with other employees, departments, and supervisors
• Responsible for First Aid and/or lifesaving techniques, which may involve routine exposure to blood or body fluids.

• Oral Communication: communicates effectively with other members of the department, the public, other agencies, other city officials and personnel; presents clear and concise spoken testimony when appearing in court; transmits appropriate spoken information via the police radio and/or telephone.
• Written Communication: prepare written reports, memos, citations, statements, forms and associated paperwork in a clear, concise, accurate, well-organized format; prepares instructional outlines when conducting training classes.
• Vehicle Operation: operates marked and unmarked police vehicles; performs appropriately under high-stress situations when responding to emergency situations; demonstrates quick reflexes and drives defensively; inspects assigned vehicle prior to use for safety and determines service needs.
• Field Preparation: maintains all assigned/required equipment for duty purposes; participates in shift change information exchange as necessary.
• Court Assistance: testifies in court cases as required; both civil and criminal; maintains appropriate demeanor and appearance at such proceedings; provides courtroom security; acts as court officer, serves summons, subpoenas, notices, orders and warrants of arrest and search.
• Training: attends and participates or instructs classes in prescribed courses of physical training, classroom instruction and field exercises, investigative methods, rescue methods; attends firing range programs as assigned and maintains required firearms qualification standards; maintains re-certification standards in operation of Intoxilyzer, self-defense techniques, radar operation and other specialty courses determined by the department.
