Salary: Band 8, £36,066 – £41,028 (Please note it is Northumbria Police policy to appoint at the beginning of the band)

Hours/Contract: 37 Hours, FTC/Internal Secondment Until 31 March 2028
The role

This could be the perfect time for you to join us in our Police Staff Investigator (PIP2) in the Major Investigation Team. Are you an experienced investigator with a keen eye for detail and a passion for pursuing the best possible outcomes? We are looking for a motivated and proactive individual to join our team, where you will play a key role in supporting complex investigations and protecting our communities. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who have significant experience in downloading, reviewing and managing CCTV evidence and can confidently analyse and interpret visual evidence as part of an investigative process.
What you’ll do
- Develop and lead investigative plans, identifying effective lines of enquiry and appropriate methods for gathering intelligence, evidence and investigative material.
- Conduct interviews with victims, witnesses and suspects, obtaining written statements and video or audio-recorded accounts to secure evidence and progress investigations.
- Attend and manage crime scenes, safeguarding and securing evidence, maximising forensic opportunities, and ensuring exhibits are seized, examined and retained in line with legislation and policy.
- Conduct a wide range of investigative enquiries in support of the Force’s most serious and complex investigations, including homicide, firearms discharges, organised child sexual exploitation, and other major crime enquiries
- Download, review, analyse and manage CCTV and other digital evidence, identifying evidential opportunities, supporting investigative decision-making and ensuring material is handled and retained in accordance with relevant procedures.
- Support major investigations by performing a range of specialist functions, which may include Disclosure Officer, CCTV Co-ordinator, Family Liaison Officer and other enquiry-specific roles.
- Identify opportunities to disrupt criminal activity and work collaboratively with internal and external partners to problem solve, while reviewing and evaluating evidence, including material recovered from electronic devices, to build robust case files and support positive criminal justice outcomes.

What you’ll bring
Essential:
- Hold College of Policing Professionalising Investigations Programme (PIP) Level 2 accreditation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act (CPIA) 1996 and its application within a criminal investigation environment.
- Demonstrate the ability to organise, prioritise and manage workloads effectively, ensuring deadlines are met and competing demands are managed appropriately.
- Possess effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise and accurate records, reports and correspondence.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel and spreadsheets to record, analyse and manage information.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team, using sound judgement and a methodical approach to achieve positive outcomes.
- Demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and accuracy when reviewing, recording and managing information and evidential material.

Desirable:
- Demonstrate experience of coordinating CCTV enquiries on major investigations, downloading and reviewing CCTV, digital imagery and video evidence, identifying investigative opportunities, supporting suspect identification and ensuring evidential integrity throughout the investigation process.
- Experience of using HOLMES during major investigations to receive actions, conduct enquiries, and submit reports, statements and other investigative material.

Terms of appointment
- This is a fixed term role subject to a six-month probationary period.
- If you are successful in your application, you will have a six-month probation period with us where you will be unable to apply for any other post advertised internally or externally.
