About the Team
The European Policy team (EP) leads HM Treasury’s policy advice and analysis about the UK's diverse economic and financial links to the EU. We unify the Treasury’s approach to the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) alongside other EU agreements. EP works closely with the International Group, the Treasury, and other Government departments to ensure the Chancellor and Treasury Ministers have detailed strategic advice, analysis, and briefing on the evolving relationship with the EU and other European trading partners.
Our team comprises around 20 staff based in London and Darlington, including specialists, economists, and finance professionals. We offer an engaging and encouraging workplace, providing opportunities to work on varied and exciting European policy issues, develop trade expertise, and enjoy a lively social life. We balance long-term policy and strategy development with reactive demands when servicing ministerial meetings or committees. Flexible working is supported, and we encourage applications from all backgrounds.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
