Job Summary
Would you like the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in a policy role at the Food Standards Agency (FSA)?
The FSA is a non-ministerial department of over 1600 people. We play a critical role in protecting public health and consumers’ wider interests in food across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our vision is an important one - to drive change, delivering “food you can trust” and working towards a healthier and more sustainable food system.
We are looking for curious, collaborative and motivated people who can analyse evidence, build strong relationships and turn complex issues into clear, practical advice. You will join a supportive and inclusive organisation with opportunities to develop across a broad range of policy areas, work with influential stakeholders and take the first or next steps in a rewarding career in policy.
We offer amazing benefits and flexible working arrangements – take a look in the Candidate Pack and take a peek at our careers page Working for the Food Standards Agency, Civil Service Careers to find out more.
Job Description
You will work closely with colleagues across the FSA and with external partners including devolved administrations, other government departments, local authorities, industry and consumer stakeholders. Depending on the role, you may support policy development, delivery and implementation, contribute to incident response activity, help maintain or reform legislation, and draft briefings or discussion papers for senior managers, the FSA Board and Ministers. All of our posts require flexibility to respond to emerging priorities and business needs.
If you’re excited by meaningful work, professional development and the chance to contribute to the FSA’s mission, we’d love to receive your application.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
