The publication produces clear, evidence-based analysis designed to help readers understand the institutions, ideas and debates shaping the world around them.
Alongside publishing accessible content, Ledger & State is committed to supporting students and aspiring professionals by creating opportunities to publish their work, collaborate with others and gain practical experience in research, analysis and written communication.
Role Description
Political Research Analyst: a voluntary, remote position designed for university students and early-career individuals interested in politics, international relations and public policy.
In this role, contributors will:
- Research and produce accessible, evidence-based articles covering UK politics, international relations, political theory, public policy, international institutions, and global affairs.
- Identify potential article topics.
- Conduct independent research using credible sources.
- Translate complex political issues into clear and engaging content for a wider audience.

The role also involves:
- Collaborating with the Ledger & State editorial team to develop article ideas.
- Responding to editorial feedback.
- Contributing to the continued development of the Politics section and wider publication.
Qualifications
- Strong interest in politics, international relations, public policy, current affairs or related subjects.
- Good research skills with the ability to identify, evaluate and synthesise information from credible academic, governmental and institutional sources.
- Strong written communication skills and an ability to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely.
- Relevant academic study in Politics, International Relations, Public Policy, Economics, History, Law or a related field is beneficial but not essential.
- An interest in developing skills in political analysis, article writing, referencing, fact-checking and digital publishing.
- Ability to conduct independent research, respond constructively to editorial feedback and meet agreed deadlines.
- Curiosity, critical thinking and a willingness to explore different perspectives are highly valued.
- Previous writing or publishing experience is advantageous but not required.
