Introduction
At Stena Line, we work together to transform our business and achieve our vision – Connecting Europe for a sustainable future. Great teamwork and a friendly atmosphere are in our DNA. We are true problem-solvers and are always up for a new challenge.
Are you practical, reliable and safety-focused, with experience in maintenance, construction or a similar environment? Are you looking for an opportunity to develop your skills and play an important role in keeping our port operations running safely and efficiently?
As a Port Maintenance Operative, you will provide on-site maintenance support to our Technical Services team, helping to maintain the port, respond to defects and ensure our facilities and machinery are kept in a safe and operational condition. You’ll work as part of a close-knit team where no two days are necessarily the same, with opportunities to learn new skills and take on a variety of tasks.
The journey starts with us – come join our family!
Some Of Your Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine maintenance and respond to defects across the port to support the safe and efficient operation of the site.
- Carry out general inspections and upkeep of the port, identifying and reporting any issues as directed by your Supervisor.
- Operate machinery and equipment where appropriately trained and qualified to complete allocated tasks safely and effectively.
- Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and records to support the ongoing operation and servicing of port machinery and equipment.
- Work alongside colleagues and external contractors, providing assistance where required while ensuring all work is carried out safely and to the required standards.
What You Will Experience
As a Port Maintenance Operative, you’ll be part of a team that plays an important role in keeping our port operations running safely and efficiently.
The role offers variety, with tasks and priorities changing depending on the current workload and operational requirements. Weekly work schedules will provide details of the tasks to be completed, but flexibility is important as priorities can change.
A large proportion of the role will involve working outdoors and in varying weather conditions. Some tasks may require you to use boats to access work areas, with suitable equipment and training provided. There may also be occasions where you are required to work in confined spaces, with appropriate training and equipment provided.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
