Brighton College are seeking to appoint a Porter on a full-time, permanent basis.

Main Purpose of the Role

To work as part of the Facilities team to ensure that the appearance of the College, both inside and out, is of the highest standard. This includes room set-ups for school purposes, College events and external functions. The ideal candidate should be a strong team player, physically fit and capable of manual handling such as lifting large furniture and setting up multiple events.

Porter General Duties And Responsibilities

  • Setting up rooms, buildings, and outdoor areas as needed for teaching, meetings, exams, events, and functions, including arranging tables, chairs, staging and movement of audio/lighting equipment and musical instruments throughout the College and associated buildings. This will include some indoor cleaning.
  • Handling the distribution of mail.
  • Performing external cleaning of all College buildings and related properties according to established schedules. The successful applicant should be prepared to work in all weather conditions.
  • Disposing of damaged furniture and other items in skips, recycling paper and other materials in line with the recycling policy and collecting and storing confidential waste for collection.
  • Undertaking driving duties and conducting maintenance checks on the Porterage van.
  • Maintaining department equipment (including minor non-technical repairs) and reporting any faults or damages to College equipment and buildings, in accordance with policy.
  • Supporting fire drills and assisting with other tasks to ensure the efficient operation of the College, as directed by the Head of Porterage.
  • Any other reasonable management requests.

Person Specifications

Essential Criteria

  • Must be physically fit and able to complete consistent manual handling.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to change and co-operate with others.
  • Able to take direction with a proactive attitude.
  • A good team player and communicator.
  • Able to use own initiative and work effectively unsupervised completing set tasks.
  • Able to monitor event information displayed on notice boards.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to manage and organise own time and resources effectively, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations.
  • Positive, polite, and approachable with good interpersonal skills enabling others to contribute positively to the work team.

Desirable Criteria

  • Possess a full, clean UK driving licence.
  • Experience handling large functions and setting up a range of different equipment.

Porter Hours of Work

40 hours per week (Monday to Friday) on a two shift rota system between the hours of 7.00am and 7.00pm. There may be occasional requirements to work outside of regular working hours, including weekends, to support events such as Open Mornings, for which overtime will be provided.

Remuneration

The salary for this role is £28,080 per annum.

Holidays

23 days, plus bank holidays increasing to 28 days plus bank holidays after 2 years of service.
