Job Summary

It takes all types of people to deliver the work that saves and improves lives. At NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT) we are a unique organisation that works with patients and donors alike to save and improve lives every day. We are on a mission to ensure that every patient receives the donation they need and we are seeking an experienced portfolio analyst to lead governance processes for a complex high value portfolio that will improve organ donation and transplant services across the UK. This is a high-impact role where your work will directly contribute to saving and transforming lives.

As a Portfolio Analyst, you’ll play a vital role in helping us make informed decisions about the projects and programmes that support our organisation’s strategic priorities. Working within the OTDT PMO, you’ll provide expert analysis and insight across our investment portfolio, turning complex financial, resource and performance data into clear recommendations for senior leaders.

You’ll develop meaningful dashboards, support portfolio governance, identify risks and dependencies, and help shape long-term transformation planning. This is an opportunity to contribute to large-scale change, influence decision-making at a senior level, and help ensure NHSBT continues to maximise value and deliver lasting impact for donors, patients and communities across the UK.

Main Duties of the Job

As a Portfolio Analyst, the post holder will work as part of the dynamic Central Portfolio Office Management delivery team that has a reach across the whole organisation to manage the investment portfolio of project and programme, including transformational programmes that help improve and save lives. The Post holder is responsible for providing value-added analysis and insight over the organisation-wide portfolio during prioritisation, planning and delivery performance, to enable timely senior leadership and executive-level decision making, including any interventions.

The Post Holder Will

  • Be accountable for tracking and reporting on the health, status, and performance of the project and programme portfolio, in line with NHSBT standards, by developing dashboards against agreed KPIs to provide visibility to senior leadership that enable timely strategic intervention.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on portfolio analysis, supporting and contributing to the overall delivery of programmes and projects, including the aggregation and assessment of risks, issues, dependencies and resource constraints at the portfolio level.
  • Analyse financial, resource, and schedule data to support effective decision-making, ensuring data integrity and consistency across portfolio tools and systems.
  • Support adherence to portfolio governance frameworks and standards, ensuring projects comply with stage-gate processes and reporting requirements.
  • Facilitate the targeting of resources, monitoring of spend, and evaluation of portfolio performance by providing high-quality analysis, communications, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Maintain and enhance portfolio management tool (e.g., PPM software), providing user support and training to ensure effective utilisation and reporting.
  • Collaborate with project managers, PMOs, finance, and directorate portfolio teams, facilitating portfolio review meetings and workshops to support prioritisation and investment decision-making, including any gateway reviews.
  • The post holder is expected to play a key role in enabling the successful delivery of change by providing robust portfolio analysis and insight, supporting the organisation to maximise value and achieve its strategic objectives.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
