The Role
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join Mapping Futures 2: Reframing Environmental Science Pathways in Further Education, a NERC-funded project exploring how environmental science pathways are understood and experienced by young adults in Further Education. The project examines the conditions that can make environmental science feel more accessible and relevant as a future study or career pathway, with particular attention to how learning environments and communication practices are shaped by neurodivergence. It brings together participatory engagement, creative workshops, and residential fieldwork to develop practical insights and resources for more inclusive environmental science progression routes.
The postholder will support the day-to-day delivery of the research, including:
- Scoping reviews
- Ethics and data governance processes
- Qualitative and mixed-methods data collection
- Analysis, monitoring, and evaluation
- Preparation of project outputs
A key part of the role will be supporting young adult participants, ensuring that their experiences inform the project’s outputs.
The Person
We are looking for a researcher with a PhD or equivalent strong research experience in a field relevant to education, inclusive pedagogy, youth engagement, neurodiversity research, or a related area. You will have experience of qualitative and/or mixed-methods research and evaluation, and be confident working collaboratively with young people, education providers, and community partners. You will be able to support co-designed and participatory research, coordinate project activity, and communicate clearly with a range of audiences.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
