Summary
As Post-Production Technician, you will support the delivery of high-quality artwork imagery across the gallery’s archive, sales, marketing, digital and publication channels during a fixed-term maternity cover period. Working closely with the Photography team, you will retouch and prepare digital files to established standards, ensuring faithful colour, texture, scale and surface representation of artworks. The role requires a highly accurate, conservation-minded approach to image production, with an emphasis on consistency, efficiency and timely delivery across a high-volume workflow.
Responsibilities
- Artwork image retouching: Carry out precise, non-destructive retouching of Fine Art artwork imagery in line with gallery standards and photographer guidance, ensuring faithful colour, texture, scale and surface representation.
- Capture-related corrections: Remove photographic or production artefacts such as dust, background marks, sensor spots, lighting inconsistencies and minor capture issues, while preserving the integrity and material character of the artwork.
- Compositing and file preparation: Composite multiple captures where required, including exposure blends, stitched details, background extensions or complex installation views, while maintaining visual accuracy and consistency.
- Colour management: Apply strong colour-management practice across the post-production workflow, including ICC profiles, colour spaces and troubleshooting profile-related issues to ensure accurate, consistent output for print and digital use.
- Workflow efficiency: Create and use batch-processing workflows, Photoshop Actions and repeatable production methods to support efficient, consistent image delivery across a high-volume workload.
- Quality control: Undertake quality-control checks before delivery, including colour accuracy, crop, dust removal, file naming, resolution, profile assignment and output suitability.
- Post-production delivery: Utilise Adobe Creative Cloud apps to edit and prepare digital images for archive, print, online, sales and marketing use, ensuring consistency in image quality and style across all platforms.
- Workflow standards: Follow established photography and post-production standards, including file naming, categorisation, metadata, colour workflow, quality control and archive readiness.
- Cross-team collaboration: Work in close collaboration with staff photographers, Publications, Digital, Communications and Sales teams to ensure high-quality images are reproduced and used consistently across all channels.
- Technical support: Assist with and provide technical guidance on more complex image requests from Communications, Sales and Photography teams, helping to resolve production challenges efficiently and to agreed standards.
- Publications and repro support: Work closely with the Publications team on repro projects as and when required, including processing and proofing client-supplied imagery, identifying and carrying out retouching, and assisting with final colour checks before files are sent to print.
- Project and deadline management: Prioritise and manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality images for archive, publication, digital, social, sales and marketing requirements.
- Continuous improvement: Explore and implement new techniques, standards and best practice to streamline the post-production workflow, improve efficiency and maintain quality across the image pipeline.
- Ad-hoc image editing: Carry out additional image-editing duties as required by the line manager, in line with gallery priorities and agreed production standards.

Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Post-Production Technician, Image Retoucher or similar role, preferably within an art-related, cultural, publishing, museum, gallery or creative production environment.
- Highly advanced skills in Adobe Photoshop and the wider Adobe Creative Cloud suite, with a working knowledge of Capture One.
- Strong knowledge of artwork retouching, colour correction, non-destructive Photoshop workflows, ICC profiles, colour spaces, digital image file formats and output requirements for print and digital use.
- Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to maintain high levels of consistency, accuracy and quality across multiple projects and image types.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Able to work confidently within established workflows, manage competing deadlines and maintain consistent output during a fixed-term maternity cover period.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with photographers and cross-functional teams.
- A careful visual eye, strong sensitivity to artwork reproduction and an understanding of how high-quality imagery supports archive, sales, publication, digital and client-facing presentation.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing project requirements and embrace new technologies, tools and techniques that improve post-production efficiency while maintaining quality.
