About the School of Psychology

The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia. It is located in the Faculty of Science and is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching. It offers world-class undergraduate psychology degrees, as well as postgraduate professional Masters training in Clinical and Forensic Psychology, an online Graduate Diploma program, and a PhD research program with over 120 students. 40 academic staff conduct experimental research in many areas of Psychology, including behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, perception, learning, memory and cognition, as well as health, social, developmental, clinical and forensic psychology. UNSW Psychology is the only School in the southern hemisphere ranked in the top 30 by discipline in the THES, QS and ARWU rankings. The School has well-equipped research and teaching facilities and attracts outstanding staff and students from Australia and overseas. UNSW is located 5 km from the centre of Sydney and is close to other research centres, teaching hospitals, transport, shopping, and beaches.

The Role

About the Position

The Postdoctoral Fellow (Level A) is expected to contribute towards the research effort of UNSW and to develop their research expertise through the pursuit of defined projects relevant to their particular field of research. This role contributes to the research project “Improving mental health outcomes through parent and teacher engagement in school-based early intervention” in partnership with Sydney Catholic Schools. This project aims to evaluate the acceptability and effectiveness of school-adapted parent training intervention, matched to the individual needs of young children with disruptive behaviour problems, delivered within a Catholic school setting in South West Sydney. This position is based at the University of NSW in the School of Psychology, however the Postdoctoral Fellow will be required to travel regularly to South West Sydney.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day work of project staff
  • Act as a key coordinator for the project
  • Undertake typical research activities including data management & analysis
  • Support the dissemination of research outcomes

Specific Responsibilities

  • Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research
  • Conduct research and/or enable research teams to create scholarly output
  • Undertake specific research projects under the guidance of a research leader
  • Support the dissemination of research outcomes
  • Undertake discipline-appropriate research activities
  • Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops
  • Assist with the supervision of research students
  • Develop and refine relevant study materials
  • Develop and maintain efficient systems of scheduling, communication, file organisation and documentation
  • Monitor adverse events and ensure they are properly documented and reported
  • Travel to trial sites to perform training, on-site monitoring and coordination duties
  • Develop effective working relationships with stakeholders
  • Prepare and submit grant, ethics and governance applications
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures

About the Successful Applicant

Selection Criteria

  • A PhD in Psychology with AHPRA endorsement as a clinical, educational, or developmental psychologist
  • Demonstrated capacity for high-quality research
  • Demonstrated experience in managing longitudinal research studies, clinical outcome, and/or randomised controlled research trials in clinical psychology
  • Demonstrated research coordination experience
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with research data management and statistical analysis using statistical software (SPSS)
  • Demonstrated and applied knowledge/understanding of HREC and regulatory applications e.g. GCP and reporting for clinical trials
  • Demonstrated skills in project management, statistical software packages (e.g. SPSS, R, MPlus) and statistical analysis
  • Bilingual capability in Arabic and English is highly desirable
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
