About The Role
Postdoctoral Research Associate
INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY
This post is offered as a fixed term contract and is funded by Medical Research Council from 1st October 2026 till 30th September 2027. In line with the University’s fair employment for all principles, any further funding opportunities identified will be reviewed and discussed during the contract.
The starting salary will be from £34,610 on Grade E, depending on knowledge, skills and experience.
The Role
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr Johannes G. M. Rack. The successful applicant will assist in the characterisation of enzymes involved in ADP-ribosylation signalling in the DNA damage response of Aspergillus fumigatus.
The post will include large scale protein purification for protein crystallisation and their characterisation with respect to activity (enzymatic assays, mutagenesis, inhibitor tests, etc.) and biophysical properties (incl. determination of binding and kinetic parameters). Knowledge of ADP-ribosylation related enzymes and how they can be expressed and characterised is essential. Moreover, the project involves extraction and characterisation of proteins from Aspergillus fumigatus (IP/Co-IP) and requires expertise in Aspergillus fumigatus culture and maintenance. Knowledge of proteomic and IP techniques is advantageous.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
