We are seeking an experienced/senior postdoctoral researcher in neuroscience to explore how the immune system shapes hypothalamic circuits involved in sleep-wake cycle regulations during development and in response to inflammation. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly ambitious, competitive, and motivated individual interested in developing an innovative research programme combining immunology and neuroscience.
The post holder will investigate the mechanisms involved in sculpting inhibitory and excitatory circuits in the hypothalamus, from early life through to adulthood. The successful candidate will join the Quintana Lab, based within the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation and the Geoffrey Jefferson Centre for Brain Research, working within a dynamic, collaborative and inclusive research environment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct original research exploring the immunological basis of hypothalamic maturation
- Strong abilities to conduct surgeries and behavioural studies in mice
- Identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data
- Draft publications and prepare them for submission to refereed journals
- Lead on and contribute to writing bids for research grants

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
