This part-time (0.5FTE) post is available from 1st November 2026.
This post is offered as a fixed term contract and is funded by BBSRC until 30 June 2027.

The Role
Faculty of Health and Life Sciences
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join an exciting and ambitious research programme investigating host-pathogen interactions using the wax moth Galleria mellonella as a sophisticated model of infection and immunity. The post is based within the Department of Biosciences and the Living Systems Institute and forms part of a major BBSRC-funded research programme focused on understanding immune responses to clinically important bacterial and fungal pathogens and developing innovative transgenic "sensor moth" technologies for antimicrobial discovery and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research.
The post holder will coordinate activities across multiple collaborating laboratories, generating fluorescent bacterial and fungal pathogen strains, undertaking infection biology experiments, delivering flow cytometry-based analyses of pathogen engulfment by insect immune cells, and generating high-quality biological samples and datasets that underpin downstream transcriptomic, genomic and functional analyses. They will be part of the rapidly growing Galleria mellonella Research Centre, working within a highly collaborative environment with access to world-class facilities in cytomics, sequencing, bioimaging and molecular biosciences.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
