About The Role

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Research Fellow to support the work of Professor Xiaohong Li. This fixed term post is available from 01 September 2026 to 30 August 2027. The project is funded by EPSRC Place Based Impact Acceleration Account GW-SHIFT Programme (Great Western Supercluster of Hydrogen Impact for Future Technologies).
The starting salary will be £43,482 on Grade F, depending on qualifications and experience.
The Post
The project aims to develop and validate a scaled seawater electrolysis prototype through a collaborative programme involving the University of Exeter, industrial partners, and civic stakeholders. The project will advance the technology from laboratory-scale electrochemical proof-of-concept to a robust prototype suitable for offshore renewable hydrogen production.
In parallel, the project will assess the technical and economic feasibility of integrating seawater electrolysis into regional low-carbon energy systems across Southwest England and South Wales. These regions offer strong deployment potential due to their abundant marine renewable energy resources, established coastal infrastructure, and growing commitment to clean energy transition. By combining prototype development with system-level feasibility assessment, the project seeks to accelerate the commercialisation of seawater electrolysis and support the development of resilient, low-carbon hydrogen supply chains for coastal and offshore applications.

The successful applicant will serve as the project coordinator, leading the core research programme while overseeing the day-to-day management and delivery of project activities. They will be responsible for coordinating collaboration across the University of Exeter, industrial partners, and civic stakeholders to ensure the successful achievement of project objectives. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for delivering and disseminating high-impact research outcomes to industry, civic, policy, and wider societal audiences. The postholder will also organise workshops, stakeholder meetings, and public engagement activities to facilitate knowledge exchange, foster collaboration, and strengthen capacity across the regional hydrogen ecosystem.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
