We are looking for an experienced PostgreSQL Database Administrator with strong data modelling and database performance expertise to join our team.
The role involves managing PostgreSQL application data stores across multiple environments, including cloud and on-premises, while working closely with development, data engineering, data science and infrastructure teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of PostgreSQL database clusters across multiple environments, including cloud and on-premises.
- Monitor, troubleshoot and optimise PostgreSQL database performance.
- Perform database migrations and manage the movement of data structures between database instances, including offline environments.
- Own and maintain data models and the lifecycle of data within PostgreSQL.
- Work closely with data pipeline engineers and data scientists to ingest and manage diverse data sources.
- Define and manage database security controls, including roles, permissions and Row-Level Security (RLS).
- Work with infrastructure teams on database installation, configuration, patching and maintenance.
- Support database availability, resilience, backup and recovery strategies.

Essential Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on PostgreSQL DBA experience, including:
- Database administration and maintenance
- Performance optimisation
- Query optimisation and execution plan analysis
- Index tuning
- Data partitioning and sharding
- Database clustering and failover strategies
- Backup and recovery
- Replication / high availability
- Schema, table and view design
- Data modelling
- JSON/JSONB data storage
- Database security, roles and permissions
Highly Desirable
- Experience with PostgreSQL extensions such as:
- pgvector
- PostGIS
- Apache AGE
- Additional experience with Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server is also required.
Data Modelling
- Strong understanding of data modelling principles, with the ability to design, create and manage schemas, tables and views to support application and data-model requirements.
- You will work closely with developers and data teams to translate requirements into effective and scalable PostgreSQL data structures.

Security Clearance & Eligibility
- Essential:
- SC clearance as a minimum
- Target:
- DV clearance
- Candidates must have lived and worked continuously in the UK for the past 5–7 years, subject to the applicable security clearance requirements.
Location & Working Model
- Hybrid working model – minimum 2 days per week in the office.
- Locations include:
- Manchester
- Andover
- London
- Candidates based in or around Edinburgh or Catterick may also be considered, depending on business requirements.
