Role Purpose
The Power Control Specialist is responsible for the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of generation and transmission assets from a Power Control Room operating on a 24/7 shift roster. The role applies practical technical expertise to a range of operational situations, ensuring adherence to operational procedures, regulatory requirements, and escalation processes while supporting business continuity and safe asset operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out generation and transmission power control activities in accordance with QHSE standards, regulatory requirements, operational procedures, and approved escalation routes.
- Support the timely and accurate publication of market and regulatory notifications by identifying relevant operational events, validating information, and escalating where necessary.
- Apply and maintain specialist technical knowledge across multiple regions and platforms to resolve operational issues and support colleagues.
Technical Scope
- Operation of power plant and supervisory control systems for:
- Active Power and Frequency Control
- Voltage and Reactive Power Control
- Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) Control
- Generation Restriction Control activities
- Maintain and develop competencies required for Power Control authorisations.
- Maintain knowledge of electrical operating philosophies, site information, contingency plans, and grid connection arrangements.
Operational Duties
- Deliver safe execution of Power Control activities, including Control Point and High Voltage (HV) Control responsibilities.
- Manage SCADA and control system alarms, including escalation and notification creation.
- Perform initial incident handling for:
- Loss of generation
- Loss of control events
- Support generation asset control for maintenance activities.
- Support generation asset control for ancillary service delivery.
- Liaise with critical stakeholders, including network operators and maintenance providers.
- Perform restricted HV Control Engineer activities up to 66kV (where authorised).
- Activate emergency and business continuity procedures when required.

- Contribute to process enhancements through appropriate reporting and escalation channels.
- Take ownership of professional development and authorisation progression.
- Support training and knowledge-sharing activities within the team.
Stakeholder Management
- Respond to customer, stakeholder, and regulatory enquiries within required timescales.
- Maintain awareness of dependencies across asset operations, transmission networks, trading, compliance, and digital technology functions.
- Act as an ambassador for the Asset Surveillance and Control function.
Success Criteria / KPIs
- Demonstrates safe, compliant, and reliable operation of generation and transmission assets.
- Maintains required operational authorisations and competencies.
- Publishes or supports regulatory communications accurately and within required timescales.
- Manages alarms, generation loss events, control loss events, and business continuity incidents in line with approved procedures.
- Maintains current technical knowledge of SCADA, Power Plant Controllers (PPC), Supervisory Control Systems (SCS), Control Point operations, and HV Control processes.
- Identifies and escalates process improvements with supporting evidence.
- Supports colleagues through training, coaching, and knowledge sharing.

Requirements
Essential
- Practical experience operating SCADA systems in a real-time operational environment.
- Experience within electrical power generation, transmission, utilities, control room operations, or operational engineering environments.
- Ability to work accurately within procedures, policies, and authorisation limits.
- Strong prioritisation and situational awareness skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly during routine and emergency situations.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
Desirable
- Experience working within a power generation or transmission control room.
- Previous High Voltage (HV) Control Engineer experience.
- Experience as an Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP).
- Knowledge of REMIT and Grid Code requirements.
- Knowledge of Control Point services, alarm handling processes, and electrical safety rules.
Qualifications
- Electrical qualification such as:
- City & Guilds
- ONC
- HNC
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline

- Shift Pattern: 3 days / 4 nights or 4 days / 3 nights
- Working Hours: 06:00 to 18:00
