Power Control Specialist
Location: Barrow-in-Furness
Start Date: 28th September 2026
End Date: 28th February 2027
Work Style: 12-hour days, 84 hours per week, 24/7 roster (3 days/4 nights or 4 days/3 nights, 6am-6pm)
Role Objective
Ensure the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of Generation and Transmission assets from the Power Control Room on a 24/7 rostered shift. Perform Power Control activities in accordance with QHSE standards, approved operating procedures, and defined escalation routes. Maintain required operational authorisations and apply sound judgement during routine, complex, and incident conditions. Support accurate and timely REMIT reporting, alarm handling, incident response, notifications, and operational handovers. Identify practical process improvements and support consistent delivery across the wider Power Control function.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform Generation and Transmission Power Control activities safely and within authorised boundaries.
- Support the timely publication of REMIT Urgent Market Messages by identifying events, validating information, and escalating as required.
- Operate systems for active power, frequency, voltage, reactive power, and wind-turbine control.
- Carry out Control Point and restricted HV Control Engineer duties up to 66kV in accordance with approved procedures.
- Handle alarms and create accurate operational notifications.
- Provide initial incident response for loss of generation, loss of control, and business-continuity events.
- Coordinate park and wind-turbine control for maintenance and ancillary services.
- Liaise with network operators, O&M providers, and other critical internal and external stakeholders.

Tasks
- Apply electrical operating philosophies, site information, contingency plans, and relevant procedures.
- Monitor operational conditions, prioritise concurrent tasks, and maintain situational awareness throughout each shift.
- Escalate complex, abnormal, or non-standard conditions through the defined technical and management routes.
- Maintain accurate logs, notifications, regulatory information, and shift handovers.
- Identify missing, unclear, or inefficient processes and raise evidence-based improvement opportunities.
- Progress through the approved competence and authorisation framework through self-directed learning and assessment.
- Respond to customer, stakeholder, and regulatory queries within required operational timescales.
- Support and inform colleagues on established Power Control processes when required.
- Act as an ambassador for the Asset Surveillance and Control function.

Decision Authority / Responsibility
- Apply operational judgement within approved procedures, competence levels, and authorisation boundaries.
- Initiate defined alarm, incident, emergency, and business-continuity protocols when required.
- Escalate matters outside personal authority or involving complex, abnormal, or safety-critical conditions.
- Coordinate operational actions with network operators, asset teams, O&M providers, trading, compliance, and IT/OT stakeholders.
Requirements
- Practical experience operating SCADA applications in a real-time operational environment.
- Experience within electrical systems, power generation, transmission, utilities, control rooms, or operational engineering.
- Able to work accurately within procedures, policies, and authorisation boundaries.
- Able to prioritise varied operational tasks and communicate clearly during routine and incident conditions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and fluency in English.
- Able to work a 24/7 roster comprising 12-hour day and night shifts.
- An electrical qualification at City & Guilds, ONC, HNC, or degree level.
- Power Generation or Transmission control-room experience is desirable.
- Previous HV Control Engineer or Authorised Person/Senior Authorised Person experience is desirable.
- Knowledge of REMIT, Grid Code regulations, Control Point services, alarm handling, and Electrical Safety Rules is desirable.
