Power Electronics Engineer

Location: Newcastle, UK
Salary: £40,000–£80,000 DOE
Working pattern: Hybrid
Type: Permanent

The opportunity

An established engineering business is looking for three Power Electronics Engineer to help develop high-performance electrical and energy systems.

You’ll take ownership of technically challenging projects, contribute to new product development and provide technical guidance within a growing engineering team.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop power electronics systems for new and existing products
  • Work across inverters, converters, motor drives, and electrical machines
  • Support circuit design, component selection, and system optimisation
  • Use simulation and modelling tools to assess electrical and thermal performance
  • Take projects from concept through testing and into production
  • Investigate technical issues and drive continuous improvement
  • Support verification, validation, and system testing
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, controls, and manufacturing teams
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering standards

Technical skills

  • Strong knowledge of power electronics, power conversion, and motor drives
  • Experience with inverters, DC/DC converters, PWM, and control systems
  • Understanding of electrical machines and motor-control techniques
  • Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, LTspice, or similar tools
  • Experience with PCB design, schematic capture, and hardware development
  • Knowledge of EMC/EMI, thermal management, and circuit protection
  • Experience with bench testing, HIL/SIL, or product validation
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers, DSPs, or embedded control systems

What you’ll bring

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Power Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related subject
  • Commercial experience developing power electronics products or systems
  • Experience taking designs through development, testing, and manufacture
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Experience leading technical workstreams or mentoring engineers
  • A practical, collaborative, and proactive approach
