Power Electronics Engineer
Location: Newcastle, UK
Salary: £40,000–£80,000 DOE
Working pattern: Hybrid
Type: Permanent
The opportunity
An established engineering business is looking for three Power Electronics Engineer to help develop high-performance electrical and energy systems.
You’ll take ownership of technically challenging projects, contribute to new product development and provide technical guidance within a growing engineering team.
Key responsibilities
- Design and develop power electronics systems for new and existing products
- Work across inverters, converters, motor drives, and electrical machines
- Support circuit design, component selection, and system optimisation
- Use simulation and modelling tools to assess electrical and thermal performance
- Take projects from concept through testing and into production
- Investigate technical issues and drive continuous improvement
- Support verification, validation, and system testing
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, controls, and manufacturing teams
- Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering standards

Technical skills
- Strong knowledge of power electronics, power conversion, and motor drives
- Experience with inverters, DC/DC converters, PWM, and control systems
- Understanding of electrical machines and motor-control techniques
- Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, LTspice, or similar tools
- Experience with PCB design, schematic capture, and hardware development
- Knowledge of EMC/EMI, thermal management, and circuit protection
- Experience with bench testing, HIL/SIL, or product validation
- Familiarity with microcontrollers, DSPs, or embedded control systems

What you’ll bring
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Power Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related subject
- Commercial experience developing power electronics products or systems
- Experience taking designs through development, testing, and manufacture
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Experience leading technical workstreams or mentoring engineers
- A practical, collaborative, and proactive approach
