Power Systems Engineer

Job Purpose

Our client is looking for a Power Systems Engineer to help build smarter and more flexible electricity networks. In this role, you will combine power systems engineering, Python programming, data analysis, and product development to create digital solutions that improve network operations, support renewable energy integration, and enable faster, more efficient customer connections.

You will develop innovative tools, solve complex technical challenges, and work with cross-functional teams to deliver products that support the future of energy networks.

Key Responsibilities

Product & Project Delivery

  • Lead the development and delivery of digital tools and technical products for smart grid and flexible network solutions.
  • Create processes, documentation, and training materials to support successful implementation.
  • Manage technical projects from planning through deployment.

Power Systems Engineering

  • Perform power system studies, including thermal, voltage, and fault level analysis.
  • Identify network constraints and recommend technical solutions.
  • Develop engineering standards, technical guidance, and analytical methods to support active distribution networks and renewable energy integration.

Software Development & Data Analytics

  • Design and develop Python-based applications, automation tools, and data pipelines.
  • Use GitHub for version control, collaboration, and code management.
  • Build dashboards, APIs, and reporting tools to support business and operational needs.
  • Analyse technical and operational data to support engineering decisions.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Work closely with engineering, planning, operations, IT, and business teams.
  • Collaborate with customers, consultants, technology vendors, and other external stakeholders.
  • Represent the client in technical meetings, industry forums, and working groups when required.

Team Support & Knowledge Sharing

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.
  • Promote engineering best practices and modern software development methods.
  • Support continuous improvement across products, tools, and engineering processes.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Power Systems Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in the energy or utilities sector.
  • Strong knowledge of power system analysis and network operations.
  • Experience with Distributed Energy Resources (DER), flexible connections, and DER Management Systems (DERMS).
  • Experience leading digital product development or technical projects.
  • Strong Python programming skills.
  • Experience developing, testing, and deploying software tools.
  • Experience with data analysis and statistical techniques.
  • Practical experience using power system modelling software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Experience using GitHub or similar version control systems.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in Power Systems Engineering or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional accreditation.
  • Knowledge of electricity distribution regulations, grid codes, and connection standards.
  • Understanding of electricity network planning, investment, and operational processes.
  • Knowledge of electricity markets, pricing, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Project management certification such as PRINCE2 or APM.
