Power System Engineer
National Grid is hiring a Power System Engineer. This position is based from our Warwick office, however, we offer flexible hybrid working options.
You will develop into a highly capable transmission planning engineer, building expertise in strategic network assessment, system modelling, and Net Zero network development while contributing to some of the most significant transmission investment decisions in Great Britain.
Job Purpose
As a Power System Engineer within the Net Zero Engineering team, you will contribute to the development of the future electricity transmission network by supporting strategic planning studies, network capability assessments, and engineering analysis that enable the delivery of Net Zero.
You will undertake a range of power system studies and analytical activities to assess network performance, identify future constraints, and support the development of network solutions for generation and demand growth.
Working alongside senior engineers and industry stakeholders, you will build expertise in transmission planning, system modelling, and strategic network development.
What You'll Do
- Support strategic network planning and capability assessment studies.
- Carry out power system simulations and analysis to assess transmission network performance.
- Contribute to boundary capability studies and network transfer assessments.
- Assess the impact of future generation and demand developments on the transmission network.
- Support the development and evaluation of network reinforcement and non-network solutions.
- Maintain and improve power system models used within planning studies.
- Support development of analytical tools, scripts, and automated workflows.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and study documentation.
- Contribute to innovation projects and emerging network planning methodologies.
- Support engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure technical work is completed to appropriate engineering standards and governance requirements.

About You
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
- Good understanding of:
- Power system fundamentals.
- Power system studies and modelling.
- Electricity transmission networks.
- Network planning principles.
- Experience of conducting power system analysis using PowerFactory, PSS®E, PSCAD, or similar tools.
- Understanding of:
- Load flow studies.
- Fault level analysis.
- Network capability assessments.
- Dynamic performance studies.
- Ability to interpret technical requirements and deliver engineering analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Desirable
- Awareness of:
- NETS SQSS
- Grid Code
- CUSC
- Strategic network planning processes
- Experience with Python, DPL, Power BI, or similar analytical tools.
- Understanding of transmission planning processes such as ETYS, tCSNP, SSEP, or NOA.
- Experience in data analytics, modelling automation, or optimisation techniques.
- Experience within a transmission owner, system operator, consultancy, or power industry environment.
