Power System & Product Development Engineer
Ready to help shape the future of a smarter, more flexible electricity network? UK Power Networks is looking for a Power System & Product Development Engineer to join our DSO directorate in London and play a key role in enabling faster, more affordable customer connections, supporting decarbonisation and unlocking the potential of distributed energy resources.
This permanent role reports to the Network Access Manager and offers a salary of £84,160 plus a 3% bonus. Following a six-month probation period, blended working is available with three days in the office and two days remote.
You’ll be at the centre of technical innovation, combining power systems expertise, data-driven insight and product development to create digital tools that support flexible connections and DERMS integration across the network. In this role, you will:
- Lead the delivery of smart grid products
- Develop Python-based tools and data pipelines
- Build dashboards and APIs
- Use GitHub to support collaboration, version control and documentation
You will also carry out power system studies including thermal, voltage and fault level analysis, helping to identify network constraints and inform decisions around flexibility procurement, DERMS operation and future network investment.

Requirements
We’re looking for someone with:
- A degree in power systems engineering or a similar discipline
- At least seven years’ experience in the energy sector
- Strong power system analysis and operational knowledge
- Experience with DER integration, flexible connections, DERMS operation, digital product development and agile technical projects

- Data analytics skills
- Practical experience with power system modelling packages such as PowerFactory
- The ability to build, test and deploy code-based tools
- Excellent project, product and stakeholder management skills
Beneficial experience and qualifications include:
- Postgraduate study
- Chartered Engineer status
- Distribution/Grid Code awareness
- Energy markets or project management qualifications
