Power Systems Design Engineer - Renewables
Leap29 are searching for an experienced Power Systems Design Engineer to join our growing engineering team and play a key role in the design and delivery of renewable energy projects across the UK.
You will be responsible for developing high-quality electrical designs for projects ranging from commercial-scale installations of approximately 200 kW through to large utility-scale solar farms of up to 60 MW.
Working across both the pre-construction and construction phases, you will contribute to system architecture, grid connections, detailed electrical design, procurement, commissioning and energisation. You will also work closely with internal teams, DNOs, contractors, suppliers and other project stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with all relevant technical and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
As a Power Systems Design Engineer, you will:
- Design HV and LV electrical systems for power generation projects, with a primary focus on utility-scale and commercial solar PV.
- Develop, review and optimise system architectures and Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) from initial concept through to detailed design.
- Manage and coordinate grid connection applications and technical submissions with the relevant Distribution Network Operator (DNO).
- Ensure designs meet applicable Grid Code, G99, G100 and connection requirements.
- Coordinate and review power system studies, including load flow, fault level, protection coordination and power quality assessments.
- Develop technical specifications for primary electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, protection systems, inverters and metering equipment.
- Support the development of protection philosophies and relay settings in accordance with grid and DNO requirements.
- Review DNO connection offers and provide technical responses to DNO queries and requirements.
- Provide technical support throughout procurement, FAT/SAT, installation, commissioning and energisation.
- Participate in design reviews, technical risk assessments and value engineering initiatives.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant BS, IEC, ENA and project-specific standards and requirements.
- Work collaboratively with project managers, construction teams, consultants, suppliers and other engineering disciplines to resolve technical issues and deliver robust project solutions.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
