Referment is working with a growing accountancy practice to hire a Practice Accountant to join its team in Durham.

This is a broad, client-facing role covering bookkeeping, VAT, year-end accounts and taxation for a varied portfolio of sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.

We're specifically looking for someone with at least 2 years' experience working within a UK accountancy practice who is comfortable managing their own workload and dealing directly with clients.

The Role

You'll Be Responsible For

  • Preparing monthly bookkeeping and account reconciliations.
  • Preparing and submitting VAT returns.
  • Preparing year-end accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.
  • Supporting clients across corporation tax, income tax, dividend tax and allowable expenses.
  • Reviewing accounting information and identifying discrepancies or queries.
  • Liaising directly with clients and responding to accounting and tax queries.
  • Liaising with HMRC where required.
  • Managing multiple client deadlines and priorities.
  • Maintaining accurate client records and ensuring relevant compliance requirements are met.
  • Building strong relationships with clients and providing practical accounting and tax support.

What We're Looking For

To be considered, you'll need:

  • At least 2 years' experience within a UK accountancy practice.
  • AAT Level 3 or above, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience preparing accounts for UK businesses.
  • Good knowledge of UK taxation, including corporation and dividend tax.
  • Experience preparing VAT returns.
  • Good understanding of HMRC requirements.
  • Strong Excel and general IT skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong client communication skills.
  • The ability to manage your own workload and meet multiple deadlines

Experience with Xero, QuickBooks, Bright or similar accountancy software would be beneficial.

Knowledge of CIS, Making Tax Digital and the VAT Flat Rate Scheme would also be useful.

This could suit an existing Practice Accountant, Accounts Assistant, Accounts Senior, Semi-Senior Accountant or AAT Accountant looking to join a growing practice and take responsibility for a varied client portfolio.
