The Practice Development Nurse (PDN)
The PDN will play a key role in supporting and enhancing clinical practice across our Adult ADHD service. The focus of this role is mentoring, supervision, structured audit activity, and patient liaison.
The PDN will proactively support clinicians through reflective practice and targeted development, particularly where concerns or learning needs have been identified. In addition, they will act as a bridge between patients and the service when concerns are raised, ensuring feedback is handled professionally, empathetically, and constructively.
This position is central to fostering a culture of learning, accountability, and patient-centred care.
Key Responsibilities
Mentoring and Supervision
- Provide 1:1 mentoring sessions for clinicians where complaints, concerns, or developmental needs have been identified.
- Work to a clear brief from the Medical Director, Operations Director, and Service Director, focusing on agreed priority areas.
- Observe clinical interactions and review documentation to provide supportive, constructive feedback.
- Promote reflective practice and create a psychologically safe environment for discussion.
- Monitor progress and provide updates to the Medical Director regarding improvements and areas requiring further support.
- Act as a developmental mentor, supporting confidence and safe, effective clinical practice.

Patient Liaison and Support
- Act as a point of contact for patients raising informal or formal concerns.
- Respond in a professional, empathetic, and solution-focused manner.
- Maintain accurate records of concerns and actions taken.
- Liaise with clinicians to ensure timely follow-up.
- Provide clear updates to patients to ensure they feel heard and respected.
- Identify recurring themes in patient feedback and share insights with the senior team to inform service improvement.
Audit and Service Improvement
- Support the design and delivery of regular, focused audits as directed by the Medical Director.
- Review data relating to prescribing, documentation standards, and overall clinical practice.
- Share findings constructively with clinicians to encourage reflection and improvement.
- Support implementation of practical improvements aligned to audit outcomes.
General Responsibilities
- Promote a supportive culture of mentoring and continuous learning.
- Work collaboratively with the Medical Director, Project Director, and Lead Nurse.
- Participate in reflective practice and supervision for ongoing professional development.
- Uphold confidentiality, safeguarding, and data protection standards.
- Champion equality, diversity, and inclusion across all aspects of the service.
Person Specification
Essential
- Registered Nurse (NMC) with experience in mental health, community nursing, or a related field.
- Experience in supervision, mentoring, or practice development.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to deliver constructive and supportive feedback.
- Experience managing patient concerns sensitively and professionally.
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation and produce clear reports.

Desirable
- Experience within ADHD or neurodevelopmental services.
- Knowledge of NICE guidance relating to adult ADHD care.
- Experience supporting clinicians within a remote or digital healthcare setting.
Accountability
The Practice Development Nurse will report directly to the Lead Nurse.
